India Beat NZ in Last-Over Thriller to Lead 2-0

India produced a second straight four-wicket win over New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday, chasing down 181 with one ball to spare after slumping to 70 for 5, to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.

The rescue was built by Tilak Varma, whose unbeaten 51 off 26 balls earned him player of the match, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, who finished 26 not out off 13. Their unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 69 runs in 30 balls is India's highest for that wicket in T20 internationals.

How did the Christchurch chase unfold?

New Zealand, put in to bat, recovered from 41 for 3 to post 180 for 5. Glenn Phillips made 70 off 43 balls and Bevon Jacobs 58 off 46, adding 116 together. For India, Punjab left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 33.

India's reply started brightly before New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner wrecked the middle order with 4 for 21, removing Abhishek Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel and Naman Dhir. At 70 for 5 in the eleventh over the chase looked gone. Dhir's 31 off 17 revived it, and after he fell at 112 for 6, Tilak and Reddy scored at nearly two a ball to finish the job in the last over. New Zealand did not help themselves: their fielders reprieved four Indian batters, and the last of those let-offs, to Dhir with 97 needed off 48 balls, started the turnaround.

What record did Abhishek Sharma set?

Abhishek Sharma's 27 off 21 balls carried a landmark. During the innings the Amritsar opener became the first batter in T20I history to hit 100 sixes in the powerplay, the first six overs of an innings. Former India captain Rohit Sharma is next on the list with 98 powerplay sixes, followed by Martin Guptill with 97. Abhishek reaches his sixes at a rate nobody else matches: one every 7.77 balls in the powerplay, against 17.05 balls for Rohit.

It is the second record Abhishek has taken in this series. In the first T20I on Thursday he hit the first ball of an innings for six for the seventh time in T20Is, passing Afghanistan's Shafiqullah Shinwari. New Zealand is also now his favourite opponent for sixes, with 17 against them.

What does the win mean for the series?

India lead the five-match series 2-0 with three games to play, and they have now won both matches from positions that looked difficult: a record chase of 226 in the first game and a recovery from 70 for 5 in the second. For Punjab followers, the series keeps delivering: Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh, two of the state's own, are central to everything this Indian side is doing.

Tilak Varma also took two catches to go with his unbeaten fifty. The third T20I follows later this week, with New Zealand needing a win to keep the series alive.

Who won the second T20I between India and New Zealand?

India won by four wickets, reaching 181 for 6 in 19.5 overs after New Zealand scored 180 for 5. Tilak Varma was player of the match for his unbeaten 51 off 26 balls.

What is Abhishek Sharma's powerplay sixes record?

Abhishek Sharma is the first batter to hit 100 sixes in T20I powerplays. Rohit Sharma has 98 and Martin Guptill 97. Abhishek hits a powerplay six every 7.77 balls.
