India completed the highest successful run chase in their T20 international history on Thursday, 22 October 2026, reaching 230 for 6 in 19.4 overs to beat New Zealand by four wickets in the first T20I at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Chasing 226 in front of a sell-out crowd, India were carried by Sanju Samson's 33-ball 67 and finished off by Naman Dhir's unbeaten 42 off just 15 balls, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The run-fest produced 455 runs across the two innings.

Phillips powers New Zealand to 225

India captain Shreyas Iyer chose to bowl first, and New Zealand made 225 for 4, their joint-best total against India in T20Is, their highest at Hagley Oval, and a score that equalled the most India have ever conceded in the format. Glenn Phillips was the standout, unbeaten on 82 off 40 balls with eight fours and three sixes. Finn Allen gave the innings its launch with 45 off 24, Tim Seifert made 24 off 17 and Daryl Mitchell 28 off 19, before Phillips and Bevon Jacobs, who hit 31 off 16 with three sixes, added 73 off 32 balls for the fourth wicket. Every Indian bowler went for at least ten runs an over: Axar Patel took 1 for 51, the returning Bhuvneshwar Kumar 0 for 49 in his first T20I in four years, Mayank Yadav 1 for 40 and Nitish Kumar Reddy 0 for 40.

A milestone night for Arshdeep Singh

For Punjab, the night carried its own markers. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, from Kharar, played his 100th T20 international, took 1 for 45, dismissing Mitchell, and effected the run-out of Jacobs by kicking the ball onto the stumps. At the top of India's chase, Amritsar's Abhishek Sharma launched the first ball he faced for six, his record seventh first-ball six in T20Is, and smashed 29 off 12 balls as he and Samson put on 93 inside the powerplay, taking India to 94 for 1 after six overs. Samson reached his fifty off 23 balls and finished with eight fours and four sixes before Mitchell Santner bowled him in the ninth over.

The wobble, and the finish

New Zealand then fought back through their spinners. Tilak Varma laboured to 6 off 11 and Ishan Kishan fell for 1 as India slipped to 122 for 4, and the chase that had looked comfortable suddenly needed rebuilding. Captain Iyer steadied it with 42 off 28, sharing a 45-run fifth-wicket stand with Axar Patel, who made 24 off 14. Both fell at important moments, but Dhir, who walked in with the rate climbing, hit five fours and two sixes in a 15-ball cameo that closed the game with two balls left. IANS reported that dew also helped the chasing side late in the evening. The second match of the series is at the same venue on Saturday.
