Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk agreed in New Delhi on Thursday, 22 October 2026, to deepen cooperation in defence, space and nuclear energy, after talks at Hyderabad House. It is the first visit to India by a Polish prime minister since 2010.
What was agreed
"We have agreed to boost cooperation in areas of defence, space and nuclear energy," Modi said at the joint press statements, inviting Polish companies to join co-development and co-production with India. The two leaders witnessed the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding. Modi said the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement had made the opportunities for the partnership even broader, and that both countries would work on trusted supply chains and their 2030 trade goal.
Trade and defence
Bilateral trade is about $6 billion, and both sides aim to raise it towards $10 billion, according to a former Polish ambassador quoted by Moneycontrol. Firstpost reported that Tusk pitched Polish defence exports, saying Poland's drones had proved very useful. Modi also said India would support every meaningful effort for peace in Ukraine and West Asia.
A shared history
Modi recalled how the Maharaja of Nawanagar, Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji Jadeja, sheltered Polish children during the Second World War, and both leaders noted Poland's help for Indian students. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also called on Tusk.
What comes next
Tusk will attend the India-Poland Business Forum in Delhi and travel to Bengaluru on 23 October to meet leaders from the IT and space sectors. The relationship was elevated to a Strategic Partnership during Modi's August 2024 visit to Poland.
