Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa said on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, that the Congress will demand Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's resignation in the Punjab Assembly session that begins on 22 October, over the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota, PTI reported.

What Bajwa said in Mansa

Bajwa spoke to reporters after meeting Jhota's father, Bhim Singh, in Mansa. He said the government cannot "evade responsibility for its failure to tackle the drug crisis" and that the feeling of Jhota's father, and of every Punjabi, is that this is a "complete failure" of the chief minister, who also holds the home portfolio. "We will demand the CM's resignation," he said. These are Bajwa's allegations and political claims.

Claims on the CBI probe

Bajwa claimed the AAP government "accepted reluctantly" the family's demand for a CBI probe. He also alleged that drugs have increased under the government and that law and order has worsened, and said no minister or MLA from the government had visited the family. The AAP government has said it handed the case to the CBI on the family's demand and that it stands with the family.

Where the case stands

Jhota was shot dead inside a medical store in Mansa on 13 October. The CBI re-registered the case and took over the probe after the state's Home Department granted consent on 20 October, and the post-mortem is to be held at PGIMER, Chandigarh. His family and supporters have not yet agreed to the post-mortem or cremation and say they will decide with the joint action committee, according to PTI.

Why the Assembly session matters

The session coincides with a two-day strike by government employees. The Jhota case, drugs and law and order are expected to dominate the opposition's attack on the AAP government.
