History
Mansa is the district headquarters of Punjab's southern cotton belt. On 13 April 1992, Mansa district was carved out of Bathinda, and the town became its administrative centre. Before that it was a tehsil town of Bathinda district.
Its position on the Delhi–Bathinda branch of the Northern Railway made Mansa a trading centre long before it became a district capital. Cotton transformed the region's fortunes: ginning mills and mandis grew up around the town, and Mansa became the place where the southern Malwa harvest was weighed, sold and dispatched.
Geography & people
Mansa lies in the southern Malwa plain, a flat landscape of cotton, wheat and paddy fields. Summers here are intensely hot, typical of the region bordering Haryana and Rajasthan.
The 2011 census counted 82,956 people in the town. Hindus and Sikhs both live here in large numbers, and Punjabi is the common language. The town serves a large rural hinterland that depends on it for markets, courts, colleges and hospitals.
Places of interest
Mansa's railway station, grain market and town gurdwaras anchor daily life, while the district administrative complex sits at the centre. The mandi in harvest season is the town's great spectacle. Nearby villages offer a straightforward look at rural Punjabi life.
Notable people
Mansa district is the home of Sidhu Moose Wala, the Punjabi singer from Moosa village whose music found a global audience. The district has also produced kabaddi players and farmer leaders.
