History
Budhlada is an old mandi town on the Delhi–Bathinda railway line. The station made it the trading centre for the surrounding villages, and the grain market remains the town's beating heart — in harvest season, the mandi yard fills with wheat and paddy brought in from across the eastern part of the district.
When Mansa district was created in 1992, Budhlada became part of it. The town's Guru Nanak College has been its main centre of higher education, drawing students from the nearby villages.
Geography & people
Budhlada stands in the eastern part of Mansa district, not far from the Haryana border, in flat cotton-and-wheat country. The town lives by the agricultural calendar.
The 2011 census counted 26,172 residents. Budhlada serves dozens of surrounding villages as their bazaar, school and hospital town, and Punjabi is the language of its streets and mandi auctions.
Places of interest
The railway station, the grain market and Guru Nanak College are the town's landmarks, alongside its gurdwaras where congregations gather through the year.
Notable people
Budhlada is known for its traders, teachers and sportspeople rather than a single famous name; its college has educated generations of the area's youth.
