Nirmal Rishi (born 1943) is a Punjabi theatre and film actress from Khiva Kalan village in Mansa district, best known as Gulabo Maasi in Long Da Lishkara. A stage veteran of more than five decades, she has acted in dozens of Punjabi films and was awarded the Padma Shri in 2024.
Early life
Rishi was born in 1943 in Khiva Kalan, a village in what is now Mansa district of Punjab, into a Brahmin family. Her father, Baldev Krishan Rishi, was the village sarpanch, and her mother was Bachni Devi. She loved theatre from her school days and also excelled at sports.
Her studies took her well beyond the village. According to the Padma Awards citation she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Rajasthan in 1966 and a master's in education from Punjabi University, Patiala, and later completed an M.Phil in physical education in 1989. She trained as a physical education instructor and enrolled at the Government College of Physical Education in Patiala.
Career
At the Patiala college her mono-acting in Rajasthani caught the eye of Harpal Tiwana and Neena Tiwana, who had come to the city to build Punjabi theatre. Rishi joined their company, Punjab Kala Manch, in the late 1960s and stayed with it for decades. She says she took part in nearly 50 of their plays, among them Adhure Sapne, Kabuli Wala, Aate Ki Katori and Chamkaur di Garhi, and learned from workshops led by Ebrahim Alkazi and Balwant Gargi. She is a life trustee of the Harpal Tiwana Foundation.
Her screen breakthrough was Gulabo Maasi in Long Da Lishkara, a role dated to 1983 by most sources, which made her a household face for Punjabi audiences worldwide. On television she appeared in serials such as Diva Bale Sari Raat, Suneha and Uccha Dar Babe Nanak Da.
Since the mid-2010s she has become a familiar presence as the sharp-tongued grandmother of Punjabi cinema. She played Nikka's grandmother in Nikka Zaildar (2016) and its sequel Nikka Zaildar 2 (2017), and her credits include Angrej (2015), Love Punjab (2015), Lahoriye (2017) and a cameo in the Hindi film Dangal (2016). She has also worked in Hindi, including Rajma Chawal and Arjun Patiala. In 2026 she moved into Hindi television as the grandmother in Udne Ke Asha.
Awards and recognition
The Indian Express reports that Rishi won the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2012 for her acting. The Padma Awards citation also lists an honour from the Punjab language department for her contribution to Punjabi theatre, a Punjab Arts Council award, an honour from the Calgary Sikh Association in Alberta for directing and acting in Dukhdey Kaliery, and a PTC film award for supporting actress.
In January 2024 she was named among the Padma Shri recipients, and President Droupadi Murmu presented the award at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 22 April 2024. Speaking to ANI, Rishi said she had worked in around 100 films and had done a great deal of theatre. In a February 2026 interview she said the award belonged to the whole industry, not to her alone.
