Sonu Sood (born 30 July 1973) is an Indian actor, producer and humanitarian from Moga in Punjab. Best known for playing villains in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil films such as Dabangg (2010) and Arundhati (2009), he became a household name in 2020 for helping thousands of stranded migrant workers return home during the Covid-19 lockdown.
Early life
Sood was born in Moga, Punjab. His father, Shakti Sagar Sood, ran a cloth shop in the town and organised langar outside it, while his mother, Saroj Bala Sood, was a professor of English and History who taught underprivileged children for free. He is the only son among three children, and his sister Malvika has described him to Indian Express as "a Moga boy" deeply attached to his roots. The family home, Sood House, stood near the Dussehra Ground in Moga.
He studied at Sacred Heart School in Moga and then left for Nagpur to complete a B.Tech in electronics engineering at Yeshwantrao Chavan College of Engineering. He has said he travelled home on buses and trains without reservation as a student. After engineering he modelled in Delhi before moving to Mumbai to try his luck in films, though his family had no film connections.
Career
Sood began in 1999 with the Tamil films Kallazhagar and Nenjinile, and soon moved into Telugu cinema as an antagonist. His Hindi debut was Shaheed-E-Azam (2002), in which he played Bhagat Singh. He drew attention as Abhishek Bachchan's brother in Mani Ratnam's Yuva (2004), and went on to appear in Jodhaa Akbar (2008) as Rajkumar Sujamal.
His breakthrough in the south was Arundhati (2009), which won him the Nandi Award for Best Villain and the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor (Telugu). In 2010 he played the lead antagonist opposite Salman Khan in Dabangg, earning the Apsara Award and the IIFA Award for best performance in a negative role. His later films include Happy New Year (2014), Simmba (2018) and Kurukshetra (2019). In 2016 he set up the production house Shakti Sagar Productions, named after his father.
Helping migrants during Covid-19
In May 2020, when the nationwide lockdown left migrant workers stranded and walking home, Sood arranged buses, special trains and chartered flights for them. He told the BBC that the sight of people walking hundreds of kilometres gave him sleepless nights, and told Indian Express that his parents' lessons on helping others shaped his decision. In July 2020 he arranged a chartered flight to bring more than 1,500 stranded students home from Kyrgyzstan. The UN Development Programme chose him for its SDG Special Humanitarian Action Award in September 2020, and his autobiography, I Am No Messiah, followed from Penguin India that December. The Punjab election commission named him a state icon.

Sood married Sonali, who is from Andhra Pradesh, in 1996, according to Wikipedia. They have two sons, Ayaan and Ishant. His parents died in 2007 and 2016.
