Narinder Singh Kapany (31 October 1926 to 4 December 2020) was a Punjabi born physicist known as the father of fibre optics. Working in London in 1953, he was the first to send high quality images through a large bundle of glass fibres, and he later gave the new field its name, built companies around it in California, and taught at leading American universities. He was also a major collector of Sikh art and a co-founder of the Sikh Foundation.
Early life in Moga and Dehradun
Kapany was born on 31 October 1926 in Moga, in Punjab, to Sundar Singh and Kundan Kaur, and he grew up and went to school in Dehradun, in the foothills of the Himalayas. Two early experiences shaped him, according to Imperial College London. A camera given to him by his father made him want to understand how such an instrument worked, and a teacher who told him that light could only travel in straight lines left him determined to show that light could be guided along a curved path. He graduated from Agra University in 1948 and worked for a time as an Indian Ordnance Factories Service officer, making optical instruments, before leaving for London in 1952.
Why is Narinder Singh Kapany called the father of fibre optics?
He is called the father of fibre optics because in 1953, as a doctoral student at Imperial College London working with Professor Harold Hopkins, he achieved good image transmission through a large bundle of optical fibres for the first time. Earlier attempts to send images through fibres had produced poor results. Hopkins and Kapany grouped hundreds of fine glass fibres into a flexible bundle, often called a fibrescope, so that light entering one end emerged at the other end and an image could be carried around bends. Their paper, A flexible fibrescope, using static scanning, was published in the journal Nature in January 1954.
Kapany then named and promoted the field. He popularised the term fibre optics in an article in Scientific American in 1960, wrote the first book on the subject, and became its best known researcher and spokesman. The principle he demonstrated, guiding light inside glass by repeated internal reflection, is the same principle used today in medical endoscopes and in the fibre networks that carry internet, telephone and television signals around the world.
From London research to California companies
Kapany received his doctorate in 1955, from Imperial College London and the University of London, and moved to the United States that year to join the faculty of the University of Rochester. He later worked at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. In 1960 he founded his first company, Optics Technology, in Palo Alto, California, and served as its chairman, president and director of research for twelve years. The company went public in 1967, and accounts of his life describe him as the first Sikh Indian to take a company public in Silicon Valley. He founded Kaptron in 1973, later sold to AMP Incorporated, and founded K2 Optronics in 2000.
Teaching and wider work in optics
Alongside business, Kapany kept teaching. He held posts at the University of California, Berkeley, was a Regents Professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz from 1977 to 1983, and was a visiting scholar and consulting professor at Stanford University. At UC Santa Cruz he founded the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurial Development and later endowed chairs in optoelectronics and in entrepreneurship. His research ranged well beyond fibre communications, covering lasers, biomedical instruments, solar energy and pollution monitoring. He published more than 100 scientific papers and four books on optoelectronics and entrepreneurship, and he held more than 100 patents.
Sikh art, the Sikh Foundation and giving
With his wife Satinder Kaur, Kapany founded the Sikh Foundation in 1967 to promote Sikh heritage, art and scholarship in the West. Over decades the couple built the Kapany Collection, one of the best known private collections of Sikh art, covering work from the seventeenth century onwards. The Foundation supported the exhibition Splendors of the Punjab in 1992 and the landmark Arts of the Sikh Kingdoms exhibition, which opened at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1999 and travelled to San Francisco and Toronto. In 1999 Kapany gave 500,000 dollars to the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and donated about 100 objects from his collection to establish a Sikh gallery there. He also endowed a chair of Sikh studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1998.
Honours, later life and legacy
Recognition came in several fields. Fortune magazine named him one of seven unsung heroes in its Businessmen of the Century issue in November 1999. He was a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Optical Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, received the Excellence 2000 Award in 1998 and the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman in 2004, and received the UC Santa Cruz Foundation Fiat Lux Award in 2008. He had married Satinder Kaur in London in 1954. She died in 2016, and he is survived by his children Raj and Kiran. Kapany died in California in December 2020, aged 94, and in 2021 India awarded him the Padma Vibhushan, its second highest civilian honour, posthumously. His lasting legacy is practical as well as scientific: every endoscopy, video call and long distance data link that travels as light inside glass rests on a field he helped to create, name and explain.
A flexible fibrescope, using static scanning,
