History

Moga district was created in 1995, carved out of Faridkot, and sits in central Malwa on some of the most productive farmland in Punjab. The town of Moga grew as a grain market on the old trade routes, and its mandi remains the commercial heart of the district.

The district's modern identity was shaped in 1961, when Nestlé set up its first Indian factory at Moga. The milk plant turned the surrounding villages into a dairy belt, with milk collection routes running out from the town each morning, and made Moga a name known in households across India.

Dairy and grain

Agriculture here is intensive: wheat and paddy in rotation, dairy on the side, vegetables for the town markets. About 996,000 people were counted in the district in 2011, spread across roughly 2,216 square kilometres. The district's mandis at Moga, Bagha Purana and Nihal Singhwala fill each harvest with grain from hundreds of villages.

Towns and villages

Bagha Purana and Nihal Singhwala are the district's other main towns, with Dharamkot as a smaller centre. The countryside is classic Malwa: flat, green, and laid out in the grid of the canal colonies. Village-level pages for Moga district are being added to the Kosh.
