Where is Nangal?

Nangal is a village in Nihal Singh Wala tehsil of Moga district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Nihal Singhwala, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nihal Singhwala community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033909, and it covers 733 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,762 people in Nangal: 1,475 men and 1,287 women, living in 517 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 733 hectares, the population density works out to about 377 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 873 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 290, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 828 people, about 30 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 69.05 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 72.87 per cent and women at 64.71 per cent. The census recorded 930 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 835 main workers, the largest group, 332, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 278 agricultural labourers and 200 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 95 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (20 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (647 hectares). About 66 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 344 cultivators and 289 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
