Early life

Sunanda Sharma was born on 30 January 1992 in Fatehgarh Churian, Gurdaspur district, Punjab, to Vinod Kumar Sharma and Suman Sharma. She grew up with an elder brother and an elder sister, Raj. She completed her graduation from Khalsa College, Amritsar, and earned an MA in English from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Though interested in music since childhood, she never initially imagined becoming a singer.

Career

While in college, Sharma began singing covers of popular songs and uploading them to Facebook and YouTube. Her 2016 cover 'Sucha Soorma' went viral across social media, drawing offers from Punjabi music composers. Her official debut single, 'Billi Akh' (2016), was followed by 'Patake' (2017), which made her a star. Her song 'Jaani Tera Naa', released in September 2017, crossed 300 million views on YouTube and remains one of the most-watched Punjabi songs ever.

She won the Best Debut Female Vocalist award at the PTC Punjabi Music Awards and the Best Female Act at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards in 2017. Subsequent hits included 'Morni', 'Sandal', 'Duji Vaar Pyar' and 'Pagal Nahi Hona'. Her voice reached Bollywood with 'Tere Naal Nachna' (Nawabzaade, 2018, with Badshah), 'Poster Lagwa Do' (Luka Chuppi, 2019) and 'Mummy Nu Pasand' (Jai Mummy Di, 2020).

She made her acting debut as Jeeti Kaur in the 2018 Punjabi war drama Sajjan Singh Rangroot, opposite Diljit Dosanjh, and later appeared in B Praak's music video 'Baarish Ki Jaaye' alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui. In 2024 she debuted at the Cannes Film Festival.

Legal dispute

In 2025 Sharma became the subject of national media attention after a public dispute with Mad4Music founder Pinky Dhaliwal, whom she accused of exploiting her and withholding her payments for years. Following her complaint, Dhaliwal was arrested on financial charges — a case widely reported, including by Mint, as an example of exploitation in the music industry.

Personal life

Sharma is unmarried and keeps her private life out of the press. She remains close to her family in Punjab and is known for her outspoken, warm presence on social media.

Legacy
