Early life

Bharti Singh was born on 3 July 1984 in Amritsar, Punjab, into a Punjabi family. Her father died when she was two years old, and she was raised by her mother Kamla Singh alongside two older siblings. She graduated from BBK DAV College for Women in Amritsar, and — a lesser-known fact — won national-level medals in archery and pistol shooting as a sportswoman before comedy found her.

The turn came in 2008, when she entered the fourth season of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge. Performing as 'Lalli', a mischievous child character, she finished as runner-up — and walked out as the season's breakout star, the rare woman to crack the boys' club of Indian stand-up.

Career

Comedy Circus made her a household name. Across its many seasons she proved herself the most versatile performer on the show — playing children, aunties, and grotesques with a physical commitment that male competitors struggled to match. She went on to Comedy Nights Bachao, The Kapil Sharma Show and Khatra Khatra Khatra, a show she conceptualised with her husband for Colors TV in 2019.

She then did what few comedians manage: she became television's most in-demand host. India's Got Talent, Dance Deewane, Hunarbaaz and Laughter Chefs put her in front of family audiences every weekend, and her warmth with contestants — especially children — became her trademark. She has appeared in films including Khiladi 786 (2012), Sanam Re (2016), the Punjabi Jatt & Juliet 2, and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023), and competed in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5, Nach Baliye 8 and Khatron Ke Khiladi 9.

Major works

Her defining work remains the Lalli character and her Comedy Circus years, when she redefined what a woman could do in Indian TV comedy. As a host, Dance Deewane and India's Got Talent showed a different skill — the ability to hold a live show together with humour and heart. She has been on the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list every year since 2016, and has won Indian Television Academy Awards in 2012, 2022 and 2023.

She built her career in an industry where female comedians were routinely cast as the joke rather than the joker — and became, by most measures, the highest-paid woman in Indian comedy.

Her appeal crosses demographics in a way few comics manage: children love Lalli, mothers love the host of Dance Deewane, and the industry respects the professional who turned a two-minute audition character into a twenty-year career. Her story — father lost at two, national medals in shooting, then comedy stardom — is one of the most unlikely rises in Indian television.

Personal life

Singh married writer Haarsh Limbachiyaa on 3 December 2017. They have two sons. The couple's YouTube channels, Bharti TV and Life of Limbachiyaas, are among India's most-watched family vlogs.

Legacy

Bharti Singh changed the economics and the imagination of Indian comedy. She proved that a woman from Amritsar, armed with nothing but timing and fearlessness, could become the centre of prime-time television — and she opened the door for every female comic who followed.
