Early life
Kapil Sharma was born Kapil Punj on 2 April 1981 in Amritsar, Punjab. His father, Jeetendra Kumar Punj, was a head constable in the Punjab Police, and his mother Janak Rani is a homemaker. His father was diagnosed with cancer in 1997 and died in 2004. Kapil studied at Shri Ram Ashram Senior Secondary School and Hindu College in Amritsar, and at Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar. He began performing in local theatre and at singing events — he has always been a singer as well as a comic.
His first television break came in 2006 with the Punjabi comedy show Hasde Hasaande Ravo. The national breakthrough followed a year later, when he won the third season of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge (2007), the stand-up competition that had launched several careers before his.
Career
After Laughter Challenge, Sharma won multiple seasons of Comedy Circus alongside various co-performers, establishing himself as television's most bankable comic. In 2013 he launched Comedy Nights with Kapil on Colors — a sketch-and-chat show built around his fictional family that became a ratings phenomenon and made stars of its ensemble, including Sunil Grover, Ali Asgar, Kiku Sharda and Upasana Singh as Bua.
In 2016 he moved to Sony with The Kapil Sharma Show, which ran in various seasons until 2023 and cemented his position as the biggest name in Indian television comedy. He made his film debut with the commercially successful Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2015), followed by Firangi (2017) and Nandita Das's Zwigato (2023), in which his restrained dramatic performance as a food-delivery rider earned critical respect. His Netflix stand-up special Kapil Sharma: I'm Not Done Yet (2022) and The Great Indian Kapil Show (2024–) carried him into the streaming era.
Major works
His landmark shows — The Great Indian Laughter Challenge (2007), Comedy Circus, Comedy Nights with Kapil and The Kapil Sharma Show — defined Indian TV comedy for a decade and a half. Ormax Media rated him India's most popular television personality in 2016, and Forbes India placed him on its Celebrity 100 list. He was awarded the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year in the entertainment category in 2013 and was nominated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
His comedy draws on Punjabi family life, Bollywood and the class divide — character-driven, musical and deeply rooted in the Amritsar of his childhood. He has spoken openly about his struggles with depression and alcohol, and about the pressure of carrying a weekly show watched by tens of millions.
Personal life
Sharma married Ginni Chatrath on 12 December 2018. They have two children — daughter Anayra, born in 2019, and son Trishaan, born in 2021. His mother Janak Rani became a beloved on-screen presence on his shows.
Legacy
Kapil Sharma did for Indian television comedy what the great film comedians did for cinema: he made it the main event. A boy from Amritsar who started in Punjabi theatre became the host every Bollywood star wanted to sit with — and proved that small-town, Punjabi-rooted humour could command the country's biggest audiences.
