Two men have been charged in connection with a shooting at comedian Kapil Sharma's café in Surrey, Canada, and a separate shooting at a home in the same city that left a woman injured, British Columbia's Provincial Extortion Task Force announced on Friday.

Who has been charged

Police identified the accused as Pardeep Singh and Saveer Khan, both aged 22. They were arrested in Surrey on 1 November and remain in custody. Each man faces two counts of reckless discharge of a firearm, one count for each shooting. The charges have not been proven in court.

The two shootings

The Canadian Press identified the business as Kap's Café, reporting that the date and location released by police matched the attack on the café on 16 October 2025. The café, at 84 Avenue and Scott Road in Surrey's Newton area, was closed when shots were fired, but two employees were inside and were not injured. It was the third time the café had been shot at in three months, after attacks on 10 July and 7 August 2025.

The second shooting took place on 12 October 2025, when shots were fired at a home in Surrey. A woman was injured in that attack. Police described both shootings as extortion-related, and the Provincial Extortion Task Force took over both investigations after identifying possible links between them.

A year-long investigation

The arrests came after more than a year of investigation. The task force worked with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia and the Surrey Police Service to make the arrests. British Columbia set up the RCMP-led Provincial Extortion Task Force in September 2025 to coordinate investigations into extortion-related shootings across the province, many of them targeting South Asian-owned businesses.

Associates of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi had claimed responsibility for the earlier attacks on the café in social media posts. Police have not said whether the two men now charged are linked to any gang, and the announced charges relate specifically to the shootings.

What happens next

Both men remain in custody. The case will now move through the British Columbia courts, where prosecutors must prove the charges. Kap's Café, which Sharma opened in Surrey in July 2025, has become one of the most high-profile targets in a wave of extortion-linked shootings that has hit the Lower Mainland's South Asian business community.
