Early life

Upasana Singh was born on 29 June 1975 in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. She entered films extraordinarily young, beginning as a child artist in the Hindi film Babul in 1986. Two years later she appeared in Bai Chali Sasariye (1988), a film regarded as a landmark for Rajasthani cinema. Growing up inside film sets across languages, she learned the craft the old-fashioned way — by watching and doing.

Unlike many child artists, she never left. Through the 1990s she built a steady career in supporting roles, working with directors like Priyadarshan and David Dhawan and appearing in films such as Darr, Loafer, Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and Hungama.

Career

Her first widely noticed performance was as the deaf-mute woman in Judaai (1997), a role that required her to act almost entirely without dialogue. She then became familiar to a generation of children as the dark fairy Cruella, or Kalipari, in the television series Son Pari, and played the comic Gangaa in Doordarshan's patriotic sitcom Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani.

The role that made her a star came in 2013: Bua — the loud, marriage-obsessed paternal aunt — in Comedy Nights with Kapil. Her Punjabi-inflected delivery and comic timing turned a supporting part into the show's most quoted character, and she stayed with the show through 2016. She has also worked steadily in Punjabi films, including Jatt & Juliet (2012), Carry On Jatta (2012), Disco Singh (2014) and Naughty Jatts.

What made the Bua character work was precision: the voice, the walk, the perfectly timed English malapropisms delivered in a thick Punjabi accent. It was character comedy built on observation rather than caricature, and it earned her a level of popular affection that her three decades of film work had never quite delivered. She remains one of the few Indian comedians to have built a major career first in cinema and then, decisively, on television.

Her filmography spans well over a hundred films across Hindi, Punjabi, Rajasthani, Bhojpuri and Gujarati cinema. Key credits include Judaai, Sarfarosh, Jatt & Juliet, Carry On Jatta, Disco Singh and Golmaal Returns. On television, besides Comedy Nights with Kapil, she appeared in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, Maayka, Bani – Ishq Da Kalma and Nadaniyaan. She has also moved into directing and producing Punjabi films.

Her recent work includes the Punjabi hit Carry On Jatta 3 and continued television appearances, keeping her one of the busiest character actors in the Hindi-Punjabi crossover space.

Personal life

Singh married actor Neeraj Bharadwaj in 2009. She divides her work between Mumbai and Punjab and has spoken in interviews about the long apprenticeship — three decades of supporting roles — that preceded her overnight-seeming fame as Bua.

Legacy

Upasana Singh's career is a reminder that longevity in Indian entertainment is its own achievement. She worked in five languages, survived the transition from 1990s Bollywood to television's comedy boom, and created one of Indian TV's most imitated comic characters. For Punjabi audiences, she remains a bridge between the industry's Mumbai years and its modern homegrown era.
