Upasana Singh (born 29 June 1975 in Hoshiarpur, Punjab) is an Indian actress and comedian whose career stretches back four decades, from child artist to the beloved Pinky Bua of Comedy Nights with Kapil. She has worked in Hindi, Punjabi, Rajasthani, Bhojpuri, Gujarati and Bengali cinema, and became one of Indian television's most quoted comic performers.

She entered films extraordinarily young, beginning as a child artist in the Hindi film Babul in 1986. Unlike many child artists, she never left. Growing up on film sets across languages, she learned the craft the old-fashioned way: by watching and doing.

A childhood on film sets

Two years after Babul, she appeared as Laxmi in Bai Chali Sasariye (1988), a film regarded as a landmark for Rajasthani cinema. It was an unusual schooling: while other children her age were in classrooms, she was learning camera angles, timing and the discipline of long shoot days. The apprenticeship served her well, and she carried it into an adult career that never really paused.

The long apprenticeship in films

Through the 1990s Singh built a steady career in supporting roles and even carried lead parts in low-budget Hindi films such as Main Hoon Geeta, Aaj Ki Taaqat and Khoon Ka Sindoor. She then settled into the supporting-character circuit, working with directors like Priyadarshan and David Dhawan and appearing in films such as Darr, Jawani Zindabad, Loafer, Deewana Mastana and Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi.

Her first widely noticed performance was as Vaani, the deaf-mute woman in Judaai (1997), a role that required her to act almost entirely without dialogue. Regular film work followed: Mala in the serious drama Sarfarosh (1999), Dulari in Hungama, the secretary in Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, Mrs. Surya Prakash in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Kanchan in Aitraaz and a cameo in Golmaal Returns.

Television: from Son Pari to Nadaniyaan

She became familiar to a generation of children as Kaali Pari, the dark fairy also known as Cruella aunty, in the television series Son Pari (2000-2004). She played the comic Ganga in Doordarshan's patriotic sitcom Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, appeared in the Zee thriller Tamanna House, and took steady roles in daily soaps: Lovely Bua in Maayka, Sid's mother in Dill Mill Gayye, Bhanumati in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat and Buaji in Bani - Ishq Da Kalma. As Taravanti Verma in the sitcom Nadaniyaan (2013-2017), in a lead role, she was already a household name before Comedy Nights arrived.

Why is Upasana Singh called Bua?

The answer is a television character. In 2013 she joined Comedy Nights with Kapil as Pinky Sharma, universally called Bua: the loud, marriage-obsessed paternal aunt whose entrances derailed every conversation. Her Punjabi-inflected delivery and comic timing turned a supporting part into the show's most quoted character, and her catchphrase "Bittu, Kaun hai ye aadmi?" ("Bittu, who is this man?") entered everyday speech.

What made the Bua character work was precision: the voice, the walk, the perfectly timed English malapropisms delivered in a thick Punjabi accent. It was character comedy built on observation rather than caricature, and it earned her a level of popular affection that her three decades of film work had never quite delivered. She stayed with the show through 2016, carried the character into Comedy Nights Live, and later played Twinkle on The Kapil Sharma Show (2016-2017).

Punjabi cinema and recent work

She has worked steadily in Punjabi films: Chhanno Kaur in Jatt & Juliet (2012), Mrs Pappy in Daddy Cool Munde Fool (2013), Pammi in Disco Singh (2014), Gulabo in 22g Tussi Ghaint Ho (2015) and Channo in Carry On Jatta 2 (2018), the sequel to one of Punjabi cinema's biggest hits. Her Hindi film work continued alongside: Manjeet in Chalk N Duster (2016), with Juhi Chawla, Shabana Azmi and Girish Karnad; a role in Judwaa 2 (2017); Jasleen Kaur Chaddha in Street Dancer 3D (2020); and Dolly Chaddha in Babli Bouncer (2022).

On television she hosted Nach Baliye 8 in 2017, played Panchami in the SAB TV comedy Jijaji Chhat Per Hain (2018-2019), and returned in Gangs of Filmistan (2020). In 2022 she turned producer with the Punjabi comedy Bai Ji Kuttange, which launched her son Nanak Singh on screen.

Personal life and legacy

Singh married actor Neeraj Bharadwaj in 2009; their son Nanak Singh made his acting debut in Bai Ji Kuttange. She divides her work between Mumbai and Punjab and has spoken in interviews about the long apprenticeship, three decades of supporting roles, that preceded her overnight-seeming fame as Bua.

Her career is a reminder that longevity in Indian entertainment is its own achievement. She worked in six languages, survived the transition from 1990s Bollywood to television's comedy boom, and created one of Indian TV's most imitated comic characters. She remains one of the few Indian comedians to have built a major career first in cinema and then, decisively, on television. For Punjabi audiences, she is a bridge between the industry's Mumbai years and its modern homegrown era.
