Early life

Simran Kaur Mundi was born on 13 September 1988 in Mumbai, into a Jatt Sikh family whose roots lie in Mundian Jattan, a village in Punjab's Hoshiarpur district. The family moved to Madhya Pradesh soon after her birth. She studied at Delhi Public School and the Scindia Kanya Vidyalaya boarding school in Gwalior, and completed a degree in biotechnology from Holkar College of Science, Indore, in 2007.

After graduation she returned to Mumbai and worked as a guest-relations executive with Fame Cinemas in Andheri, managing bookings for film and media professionals. There she was noticed by the celebrated make-up artist duo Bharat and Dorris Godambe, who urged her to enter the Femina Miss India pageant — despite her having no formal modelling experience.

Career

She won the title of Femina Miss India Universe 2008 on 5 April 2008, and went on to represent India at the Miss Universe 2008 pageant in Nha Trang, Vietnam — placing first runner-up in the Beach Beauty competition, second runner-up in Evening Gown, and among the top five in the swimsuit round.

Her acting debut came with the Hindi film Jo Hum Chahein (2011). She made her Punjabi debut opposite Gippy Grewal and Jazzy Bains in Best of Luck (2013), directed by Manmord Sidhu, and her Telugu debut the same year with Potugadu opposite Manoj Manchu, which opened strongly. She went on to appear in Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi (2014), Mundeyan Ton Bachke Rahin (2014) and as one of the leads in Kapil Sharma's Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2015).

Major works

Her most visible work spans three industries: the Miss Universe 2008 pageant that made her famous, her Hindi films Jo Hum Chahein and Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, her Punjabi films Best of Luck and Mundeyan Ton Bachke Rahin, and her Telugu debut Potugadu. As a model she walked for leading designers and appeared in national advertising campaigns before and alongside her film career.

She represents a particular Mumbai-Punjabi crossover story: a biotechnology graduate who entered films through the pageant route and worked across Hindi, Punjabi and Telugu cinema within her first five years as an actress.

As a model she was among the most successful of her Miss India batch, and her pageant training — poise, discipline, camera awareness — served her well in an acting career conducted across three film industries and two languages she had to learn on the job. Few Miss India winners have worked in as many industries as she did in her first five years — Hindi, Punjabi and Telugu, each entered on merit.

Personal life

Mundi married Gurickk G Maan — a video director and film producer, and the son of legendary Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan — on 31 January 2020, after a five-year courtship. She divides her time between Mumbai and Punjab.
