Navjot Singh Sidhu: Sixer Sidhu of Patiala

Navjot Singh Sidhu (born 20 October 1963) is a former Indian Test opener, cricket commentator, television personality and politician from Patiala, Punjab. Known as "Sixer Sidhu" for his big hitting, he later became famous for his one-liners on air and his years in the Lok Sabha and the Punjab government.

Early life

Sidhu was born in Patiala, Punjab, on 20 October 1963, according to Wikipedia and the BBC. His father, Bhagwant Singh, was a lawyer who wanted his son to become a top-class cricketer, Wikipedia reports. Patiala is the administrative capital of Patiala district, and its tehsils include Patiala. He studied at Yadavindra Public School in Patiala and then at HR College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai.

Cricket career

Sidhu made his first-class debut for Punjab against Services in Amritsar in November 1981 and scored 51. After a century for North Zone against the touring West Indies, he played his first Test in Ahmedabad in November 1983. He scored 20, was booed off, and was dropped after the next Test.

He returned for the 1987 World Cup and scored four half-centuries, starting with 73 off 79 balls against Australia. The next year he was named man of the Asia Cup. He came back to Tests in November 1988 with 116 against New Zealand in Bangalore, and in 1993 he made 134 against England at Gwalior, his highest one-day score.

His only Test double century, 201 against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 1997, came on the 1996-97 tour. He retired from all cricket in December 1999. The BBC counts 3,202 runs at an average of 42 in 51 Tests and 4,413 runs in 136 one-day internationals.

Commentary and television

Sidhu began commentating on India's 2001 tour of Sri Lanka, and his sayings became known as "Sidhuisms". He judged The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, appeared in Bigg Boss in 2012, and was a permanent guest on Comedy Nights with Kapil and The Kapil Sharma Show. After the Pulwama attack in February 2019, remarks of his drew heavy criticism and he was removed from the Kapil Sharma show, Wikipedia and the BBC report. He returned to IPL commentary in 2024.

Politics

Sidhu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and won the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat in 2004. He resigned after a 2006 court conviction, won the seat back in a by-election once the Supreme Court stayed the conviction in 2007, and won again in 2009. He was a Rajya Sabha member from April to July 2016, then quit the BJP.

In January 2017 he joined the Indian National Congress and won Amritsar East that year. He served as Punjab's Minister for Tourism and Cultural Affairs, and resigned from the cabinet in 2019. In 2018 he attended Imran Khan's swearing-in in Pakistan, a trip that drew criticism at home.

He became Punjab Congress president on 18 July 2021 and resigned on 28 September 2021. In 2022 he lost Amritsar East to Jeevan Jyot Kaur of the Aam Aadmi Party. The Tribune reported in July 2026 that he has largely stayed away from active politics since then and was left out of the new state Congress body.

The 1988 case

In December 1988 a 65-year-old man, Gurnam Singh, died after an altercation in Patiala. Sidhu pleaded not guilty, and a trial court acquitted him in 1999. The High Court convicted him in 2006, and in 2018 the Supreme Court acquitted him of manslaughter and fined him Rs 1,000 for causing hurt. On 19 May 2022 it sentenced him to one year in prison, and he was released on 1 April 2023.
