Tajinderpal Singh Toor (born 13 November 1994) is an Indian shot putter from Khosa Pando village in Moga district, Punjab. A two-time Asian Games champion, he won gold at Jakarta 2018 and Hangzhou 2023, holds the Indian record of 21.77 m, and added Asian Games silver in Nagoya in September 2026.

Early life

Toor was born in Khosa Pando, a village in Moga district, into a farming family. He began as a cricketer and switched to shot put at the insistence of his father, Karam Singh. After a Bachelor of Physical Education at Malwa College of Physical Education in Bathinda, he joined the Indian Navy in 2015 under the sports quota and served as a chief petty officer. Most profiles name Khosa Pando as his birthplace; a few list other places in Punjab.

Rise to Asian champion

He made his international debut at the 2015 Universiade in Gwangju, finishing fifth. At the 2017 Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar he won silver with 19.77 m, just 3 cm short of gold, and he placed eighth at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Then came Jakarta. At the 2018 Asian Games he won gold with 20.75 m, a Games record, in his fifth attempt. His father died of bone cancer a couple of days later, and when Toor won the 2019 Asian Championships gold in Doha with 20.22 m, he dedicated it to him. He received the Arjuna Award in 2019.

National and Asian record

Training under coach Mohinder Singh Dhillon at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala, Toor competed at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 despite a wrist fracture the year before, and was 24th in qualifying. On 19 June 2023 he threw 21.77 m at the National Inter-State Championships in Bhubaneswar, a new Indian record that also stood as the Asian record at the time.

Later in 2023 he won the Asian Championships in Bangkok with 20.23 m and defended his Asian Games title in Hangzhou with 20.36 m. He added the 2024 Asian Indoor Championships gold with 19.72 m, and in 2024 he was appointed a deputy superintendent of police in the Punjab Police.

2026 season

In 2026 he won silver at the Asian Indoor Championships in Tianjin with an Indian indoor record of 20.05 m, and placed fifth at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with 20.27 m. At the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on 26 September 2026 he threw a season-best 20.64 m for silver, 17 cm behind Iran's Mohammadreza Tayebise, whose Games record of 20.81 m erased Toor's own mark. It made him a three-time Asian Games medallist, but ended his bid to become the first Indian track and field athlete with three straight individual Asian Games golds.
