Harbhajan Mann: Punjabi Singer & Actor

Harbhajan Mann (born 1965) is a Punjabi singer, actor and film producer from Khemuana village in Bathinda district. He grew up in Canada, broke through with "Chithiye Nee Chithiye" in 1992 and the album Oye Hoye in 1999, and is widely credited with helping revive Punjabi cinema with his 2002 debut film Jee Aayan Nu.

Early life

Mann was born in Khemuana, a village in Bathinda district, Punjab, into a Sikh family. Indian Express describes Khemuana as his native village and names his father as Harnek Singh. His brother, Gursewak Mann, is also a singer and works as a commercial pilot.

He spent his school years in British Columbia, Canada, where he first sang at local shows for the Asian community. He learnt music from his first teacher, Karnail Singh, and later from Sheik Hamed and Balbir Singh Bandhu. In Canada he was also noticed by the Punjabi music director Charanjit Ahuja, who was touring there.

Career

His first professional break came in 1992 with "Chithiye Nee Chithiye", recorded while he was still in Canada. The song was a big hit with Punjabi listeners in Punjab and abroad. Finding the Punjabi music market in Canada too small, he moved his base to Punjab.

The turning point was Oye Hoye (1999), an album backed by MTV and T-Series that made him a household name in India. He has said that people still recognise him by "Gallan Goriyan". Hits such as "Haaye Meri Billo", "Nachlai", "Lala Lala Lala" and "Jag Jeondeyan De Mele" followed, and by 2002 Tribune listed him among India's top five Punjabi artists, with six hit albums to his name.

Mann made his acting debut in Jee Aayan Nu (2002), directed by Manmohan Singh, a film Hindustan Times describes as a benchmark in reviving a Punjabi film industry that was fading at the time. He went on to star in Asa Nu Maan Watna Da, Dil Apna Punjabi, Mitti Wajan Mardi, Haani and Gaddar: The Traitor (2015), among others.

His 17th album, Vaari Vaari, arrived in 2010, and in 2017 he released Satrangi Peengh 3: Jinddriye, his first album in five years, marking 25 years in music and films. He has often said he prefers Punjabi cinema to Bollywood; in 2012 he told Hindustan Times he turned down the role that Sonu Sood played in Singh Is Kinng.

Personal life

Mann has kept a close tie with his home village. In 2009, when a political party tried to claim his family's support during an election visit to Khemuana, he said publicly that he was committed only to his art and cinema. His folk roots show in his singing, and he has named the Pakistani Punjabi folk singer Shaukat Ali as a major inspiration, whom he first heard in concert in Toronto in 1985.
