Harbhajan Mann: Punjabi Singer & Actor

Harbhajan Mann is a Punjabi singer, actor and film producer from Khemuana village in Bathinda district, born in 1965. Raised and schooled in Canada, he broke through with the song Chithiye Nee Chithiye in 1992 and the album Oye Hoye in 1999, then helped revive Punjabi cinema as the star of Jee Aayan Nu in 2002.

Mann was born in Khemuana, a village in Bathinda district, Punjab, into a Sikh family. The Indian Express describes Khemuana as his native village and names his father as Harnek Singh. His brother Gursewak Mann is also a singer and works as a commercial pilot.

He spent his school years in British Columbia, Canada, where he first sang at local shows for the South Asian community. He learnt music from his first teacher, Karnail Singh, and later from Sheik Hamed and Balbir Singh Bandhu. In Canada he was also noticed by the Punjabi music director Charanjit Ahuja, who was touring there at the time.

Music breakthrough

His first professional break came in 1992 with Chithiye Nee Chithiye, recorded while he was still based in Canada. The song was a big hit with Punjabi listeners in Punjab and abroad. Finding the Punjabi music market in Canada too small, he moved his base to Punjab to record his albums.

The turning point was Oye Hoye in 1999, an album backed by MTV India and T-Series that made him a household name across India. He has said that people still recognise him by the song Gallan Goriyan. Hits such as Haaye Meri Billo, Nachlai, Lala Lala Lala and Jag Jeondeyan De Mele followed, and by 2002 The Tribune listed him among India's top five Punjabi artists, with six hit albums to his name.

Film career and the Punjabi cinema revival

Mann made his acting debut in Jee Aayan Nu in 2002, directed by Manmohan Singh. Hindustan Times describes the film as a benchmark in reviving a Punjabi film industry that was fading at the time, and his clean, family-centred films became a model for the industry's new wave.

He went on to star in Asa Nu Maan Watna Da, Dil Apna Punjabi, Mitti Wajan Mardi, Mera Pind: My Home, Jag Jeondeyan De Mele and Heer Ranjha, several of them with director Manmohan Singh. Later films include Yaara O Dildaara, Haani in 2013, Gaddar: The Traitor in 2015 and Saadey CM Saab in 2016. He has often said he prefers Punjabi cinema to Bollywood, and in 2012 he told Hindustan Times that he had turned down a role in the Hindi film Singh Is Kinng.

Later work

Mann's album work continued alongside the films. Satrangi Peengh 2, made with his brother Gursewak Mann, was released on 2 January 2013, and he has said he wants to make music that will live for decades. His 17th album, Vaari Vaari, had arrived in 2010, and in 2017 he released Satrangi Peengh 3: Jinddriye, his first album in five years, marking 25 years in music and films. In 2014 he released the single Delhi 84, with music by Sukshinder Shinda.

In 2022 he returned to the big screen in PR, reuniting with director Manmohan Singh after almost a decade, PTC Punjabi reported. The cast also included Delbar Arya, Kanwaljit Singh, Sardool Sikander, Amar Noorie and Karamjit Anmol. The reunion mattered to longtime viewers because the Mann and Singh partnership had shaped Punjabi cinema in the 2000s.

Honours and public life

In December 2020 the Punjab Languages Department selected Mann for its Shiromani Gayak award. He declined to accept it, saying that people's love was the biggest award of his career and that all attention should go to the peaceful farmers' protest then under way at Delhi's borders, PTI reported. He had also released songs in support of the protest and visited the protest sites.

Mann has kept a close tie with his home village. In 2009, when a political party tried to claim his family's support during an election visit to Khemuana, he said publicly that he was committed only to his art and cinema. His folk roots show in his singing, and he has named the Pakistani Punjabi folk singer Shaukat Ali as a major inspiration, whom he first heard in concert in Toronto in 1985.

ਦਸੰਬਰ 2020 ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਨੇ ਮਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸ਼ਿਰੋਮਣੀ ਗਾਇਕ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਲਈ ਚੁਣਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਲੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਰੀਅਰ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਰਹੱਦਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੇ ਸ਼ਾਂਤਮਈ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਵੱਲ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪੀਟੀਆਈ ਨੇ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਦੀ ਹਮਾਇਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੀਤ ਵੀ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਨਾ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਵੀ ਗਏ ਸਨ।

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਬਠਿੰਡਾ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਖੇਮੂਆਣਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ। ਉਹ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਦੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਕੋਲੰਬੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਡੇ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ, ਫਿਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਰੀਅਰ ਲਈ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਪਰਤ ਆਏ।

ਉਹ ਗੀਤਾਂ ਚਿੱਠੀਏ ਨੀ ਚਿੱਠੀਏ ਅਤੇ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਗੋਰੀਆਂ, ਐਲਬਮ ਓਏ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ ਜੀ ਆਇਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁੱਖ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਲਈ ਜਾਣੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਫ਼ਿਲਮ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਿਨੇਮਾ ਮੁੜ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਸਿਹਰਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। 2022 ਦੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਾਅਦ ਦੀ ਫ਼ਿਲਮ ਪੀਆਰ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ਕ ਮਨਮੋਹਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਲ ਫਿਰ ਜੋੜਿਆ।
