Jimmy Shergill, born Jasjit Singh Gill on 3 December 1970 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, is an Indian actor and producer who works in Hindi and Punjabi films. He broke through with Mohabbatein (2000), became one of Hindi cinema's most trusted character actors, and at the same time built a career as a leading man and producer in Punjabi cinema.

Early life and education

Shergill was born into a Punjabi Sikh family of landowners. His father was Satyajit Singh Shergill and his mother Balraj Kaur Shergill, and his paternal great-aunt was Amrita Sher-Gil, one of India's most important modern painters. He studied at St. Francis' College in Lucknow for a few years, then moved with his family to Punjab, their ancestral state, in 1985. There he attended The Punjab Public School at Nabha and Bikram College of Punjabi University in Patiala, and he completed his graduation at Post Graduate Government College 11 in Chandigarh.

Acting was not the original plan for a boy from a landowning family. A cousin persuaded him to try his luck in the film industry, and after moving to Mumbai he trained in Roshan Taneja's acting classes. That training, and the seriousness he brought to it, shaped the understated style that later became his signature.

How did Jasjit Singh Gill become Jimmy Shergill?

The name Jimmy comes from his first film. In Gulzar's Maachis (1996), a critically acclaimed film about the militancy years in Punjab, he played Jaimal Singh, a character known as Jimmy, and he has been credited as Jimmy Shergill ever since. Maachis did reasonably well and brought him to the notice of leading filmmakers in Mumbai. He has since changed the spelling of his family name to Sheirgill in his own credits, because the name Jimmy Shergill was already in use on social media, though he remains widely known by the Shergill spelling.

Hindi cinema: from romantic hero to character actor

His breakthrough came with Aditya Chopra's Mohabbatein (2000), the highest grossing Hindi film of its year, in which he played Karan Choudhary alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai. Romantic roles followed, in films such as Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai (2002), but he soon chose range over image: a dying young man in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003), a campus rebel in Haasil (2003), a soldier in Yahaan (2005) and Victor in Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006).

The turn deepened with A Wednesday! (2008), where his police inspector Arif Khan won the Producers Guild award for best supporting actor, and with a run of films that showed how many kinds of men he could play: Zakir Khan in My Name Is Khan (2010), the rejected suitor Raja Awasthi in Tanu Weds Manu (2011), the brooding royal Aditya Pratap Singh in Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster (2011) and its sequels, and a police officer in the heist drama Special 26 (2013). His supporting roles in Lage Raho Munna Bhai, My Name Is Khan and Tanu Weds Manu: Returns (2015) are among his highest grossing films, and the last of them earned him a Filmfare nomination for best supporting actor. He has said, looking back, that character roles are what kept him relevant for so many years, though he now regrets having been in such a hurry to shed his early romantic image. Critics have made the same point in kinder words: the Indian Express has noted that he focused on his characters rather than on being the hero, and Firstpost has called him one of the most versatile actors of his generation.

Punjabi cinema and producing

Shergill returned to his roots in 2005 with Manmohan Singh's Yaaran Naal Baharan, which did well at the box office and began his second career as a Punjabi leading man. Mannat (2006) and Tera Mera Ki Rishta (2009) followed, and Mel Karade Rabba (2010), in which he played Rajveer Gill, won him the PTC Punjabi Film Award for best actor. In 2018 his fellow Punjabi star Harbhajan Mann publicly thanked him for holding his head high in Bollywood while still choosing to make quality Punjabi films, a compliment that sums up how the Punjabi industry sees him.

He also became a producer. His first production, Dharti (2011), in which he played the lead, did well, and his company followed it with Taur Mittran Di (2012), the multi-star Saadi Love Story (2013), built around Diljit Dosanjh and Amrinder Gill with Shergill himself in a cameo, and Rangeelay (2013), in which he starred opposite Neha Dhupia. As an actor he carried major Punjabi films through the decade: Aa Gaye Munde UK De (2014), Shareek (2015), in which he played a double role, Vaisakhi List (2016), which brought a Filmfare Punjabi best actor nomination, Jindua (2017) and Daana Paani (2018), in which Harbhajan Mann also sang. Later Punjabi work includes Shareek 2 (2022), Tu Hovein Main Hovan (2023) and Maa Jaye (2025).

Streaming and later work

Streaming gave the character actor a leading man's canvas. He made his digital debut as a gangster in Rangbaaz Phirse (2019), then played the title role of Your Honor (2020 onwards, two seasons) on SonyLIV: Judge Bishan Khosla, a principled district judge and single father whose son is involved in a hit and run accident, and who must decide how far he will bend the law he serves. Shergill has said that a web series, with eight to ten episodes, lets an actor truly live inside a character in a way a two hour film cannot. On Netflix he played the astrologer politician Avinash Shukla in the heist comedy Choona (2023), and he led the cast of Ranneeti: Balakot and Beyond (2024) as Kashyap Sinha. Recent film work includes Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba (2024) and the Netflix film Sikandar Ka Muqaddar (2024).

Honours and personal life

His main honours are the Producers Guild award for best supporting actor for A Wednesday!, the PTC Punjabi Film Award for best actor for Mel Karade Rabba, the BIG Star award for most entertaining actor in a thriller for Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns (2013), a Filmfare best supporting actor nomination for Tanu Weds Manu: Returns, and Filmfare Punjabi best actor nominations for Vaisakhi List and Jindua. Away from work he has walked the ramp with underprivileged children for charity in 2013, donated warm clothes for the homeless in north India in 2014, and joined the telethon that raised funds to rebuild flood hit Kerala in 2018. He married his longtime girlfriend Priyanka Puri in 2001, and the couple have a son, Veer.
