Who is Dev Kharoud?

Dev Kharoud, born Davinder Singh Kharoud on 22 April, is a Punjabi film actor from Patiala district. He built his name playing the outlaw Rupinder Gandhi in Rupinder Gandhi – The Gangster..? (2015) and its sequel, then headlined the hits Dakuan Da Munda (2018) and Blackia (2019). In an industry where most leading men arrive as singers, he is known as an actor who came up through theatre and earned his place by acting alone.

Early life and theatre roots

Kharoud comes from Khera Jattan, a village in Patiala district, and was born and raised there, according to a long interview profile on the Chai with T podcast. He took part in sports and school events as a boy, and found theatre during his college years. He completed a B.A. and trained on stage under directors including Balraj Pandit, Rajesh Sharma and Samuel John. Spotboye, in a profile of his early career, notes that he started acting at a very young age as a theatre artist under Pandit and Sharma.

The stage also gave him his first professional company. He worked as a comedian on stage alongside Bhagwant Mann, who later became Punjab's chief minister, and played varied roles in stage productions. Those theatre years are still visible in his screen work: a strong physical presence, clear dialogue delivery and an ease with both comedy and menace. He began as a comic actor, and only later became known for intense, serious roles.

Television and early films

Like many Punjabi actors of his generation, Kharoud reached cinema through television. His TV serials include Agg De Kalire, Alhna, Jugnu Mast Mast, Asan Hun Tur Jana, June 85, Koi Pather Se Na Mare, Roop Basant and Khada Pita Barbaad Kita. His first film appearance was a small role, as a friend of the hero, in Dil Apna Punjabi (2006). He followed it with Hashar: A Love Story (2008), and in 2010 he acted in and produced Kabbadi Ik Mohhabat, playing Jagjit Singh.

A more serious turn came with Sadda Haq (2013), where he played Rajwant Singh, a character inspired by Balwant Singh Rajoana. The role brought him wide news attention and showed casting directors that the former comedian could carry a heavy part. In 2016 he played Kehar Singh in Saka: The Martyrs of Nankana Sahib and Zorawar Singh in Dulla Bhatti Wala, adding period and historical roles to his range before his breakthrough arrived.

Rupinder Gandhi and the breakout

The turning point was Rupinder Gandhi – The Gangster..? in 2015. Kharoud played the title role, a real life figure presented in the film as a Robin Hood style outlaw. The film was a major success and changed his standing overnight, from supporting and comic parts to a bankable lead. He returned to the role in Rupinder Gandhi 2: The Robinhood (2017), and that performance earned him a nomination for Critics Best Actor at the Filmfare Awards Punjabi in 2018. He also played Karma in Bailaras the same year.

What are Dev Kharoud's best known films?

His best known films after the Gandhi breakthrough show three different sides of him. In Dakuan Da Munda (2018) he played Mintu Gurusaria, a promising kabaddi player whose life is wrecked by addiction, in a film based on the autobiography of the gangster turned writer of the same name. The story follows Mintu's effort to fight addiction and rebuild his life, and the film gave Kharoud his most emotional lead role of that period. His performance brought him a Best Actor nomination at the PTC Punjabi Film Awards in 2019.

In 2019 he appeared in three films. In DSP Dev he played Dev Shergill, an honest police officer posted to Daulatpura, where corruption has taken root and the badge alone does not give him control. In Blackia he played Gama, a man who enters gold smuggling and rises in the criminal world, then turns against the forces that used him. Blackia earned about 18 crore rupees worldwide and was counted a hit, and it brought him another PTC Best Actor nomination, in 2020. The third release that year was Kaka Ji, where he played Kulwinder Kaka. Taken together, the three films fixed his screen image: a man of authority, a man of the underworld, and a man trying to come back from ruin.

Recent work and screen image

Kharoud has stayed in the action drama lane, while returning often to the franchises he built. His later films include Zakhmi (2020), Dakuaan Da Munda 2 (2022), in which he played Manga Singh, Shareek 2 (2022) alongside Jimmy Sheirgill, Bai Ji Kuttange (2022), Yaaran Da Rutbaa (2023) and Maurh (2023), where he played Kishna Maurh opposite Ammy Virk. Blackia 2 (2024) brought back Gama, in a dual role, in a crime story set in 1970s Punjab, and Gandhi 3 (2024) returned him to Rupinder Gandhi. He played Baldev Singh Batth in Majhail (2025).

Dakuaan Da Munda 3, directed by Happy Rode and co starring Baani Sandhu, reached cinemas in 2025 and had its digital premiere on ZEE5 on 2 October 2025. It follows an orphaned young man who dreams of becoming a boxer and is pulled into pain and struggle after he moves to expose the drug trade at his college. Kharoud has described the film as a story of survival, courage and redemption. A sequel, DSP Dev 2, is listed for 2026. He has also appeared in music videos, including Afsana Khan's Surrender (2021) and Sunanda Sharma's Jatt Disda (2023). His screen persona rests on two familiar Punjabi figures, the rustic strongman and the outlaw with a code, and his sequels keep finding audiences because viewers know exactly which man they are coming to watch, and still want to watch him.
