Babbu Maan: Punjabi Singer, Songwriter & Actor

Babbu Maan (born Tejinder Singh Maan, 29 March 1975) is a Punjabi singer-songwriter, music director, actor and film producer from Khant Maanpur village in Fatehgarh Sahib district. One of Punjabi music's most independent voices, he writes his own lyrics and composes his own songs, and he has built a career that moves between studio albums, self-made films and live shows across the Punjabi speaking world.

Early life and first recordings

Babbu Maan was born Tejinder Singh Maan on 29 March 1975 in Khant Maanpur, a village in Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab. Babbu is the name he has performed under from the start. The village has stayed at the centre of his work: he later built a film set there, and his songs return again and again to village life, farming families and the Punjab countryside he grew up in.

He recorded his first album, Sajjan Rumaal De Geya, in 1997, before he had a label or an audience. Most of those early songs did not stay in that first form: he revised and re-released many of them on the albums that followed, an early sign of the control he has always kept over his own writing. His years active are counted from 1997, and nearly three decades on he remains his own lyricist and composer on almost everything he releases.

The albums that made his name

His official debut album, Tu Meri Miss India, arrived in 1999, but the breakthrough came with Saaun Di Jhadi in 2001. Its songs, among them Chan Chanani, Raat Guzarlayi, Dil Ta Pagal Hai, Ishq, Kabza and Touch Wood, established his voice: plain spoken Punjabi, village imagery and melodies that worked as well at a village fair as on diaspora stages. Ohi Chann Ohi Rataan followed in 2004, and Pyaas in 2005 became one of the best selling Punjabi albums of its time.

In 2007 he released Mera Gham, his first Hindi album, and in 2009 came Singh Better Than King, his first religious album. Its song Baba Nanak took aim at fake saints and self styled preachers in Punjab, and it set off a wide public debate about the deras and godmen it criticised. The episode fixed Maan's public image as a singer willing to say in song what others would only say in private, and it deepened the loyalty of the audience that has followed him since.

Talaash and the years around it

Eight years separated Pyaas from his next commercial Punjabi album, and the gap had personal causes. Speaking to the Hindustan Times in July 2013, Maan described losing his mother in 2010 and his father in February 2012, and a period of illness in which he was largely confined to his home. He said he wrote more than fifty songs in that time, and that the pain of those separations runs through the album that came out of it. Talaash: In Search of Soul was released on 4 July 2013 and entered the top 10 of Billboard's World Albums chart.

The comeback was confirmed in 2014, when he won four World Music Awards: World's Best Indian Male Artist, World's Best Indian Live Act, World's Best Indian Entertainer and World's Best Indian Album for Talaash. He had already been named Best International Artist at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards in 2010, and two daf BAMA Music Awards in Germany followed in 2017. The album run continued with Itihaas (2015), Ik C Pagal (2018), Pagal Shayar (2020) and Adab Punjabi (2022), alongside a steady stream of singles, among them Purani Yaari with Jazzy B.

Films: actor, writer and producer

Maan's film career began with Hawayein (2003), set against the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, in which he took a supporting role and also wrote and sang for the soundtrack alongside Sukhwinder Singh and Jaspinder Narula. The film was banned in India but found success overseas. His first Punjabi film as the main lead was Rabb Ne Banaiyan Jodiean (2006), and he returned strongly in 2008 with Hashar: A Love Story. From Ekam: Son of Soil (2010) onward he wrote, produced and starred in his own films, including Hero Hitler in Love (2011) and Desi Romeos (2012), followed by Baaz (2014) and Banjara (2018), a film based on the lives of truck drivers. He is a partner in Maan Films, and in 2010 he built a film set called Ishqpura in his native village.

As a playback singer he has also crossed into Hindi films, singing Rabb Na Kare for Vaada Raha (2009), Challa for Crook (2010) and Jugni for Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster (2011). In 2024 he played the title role in Sucha Soorma, and in 2025 he starred in Shaunki Sardar, released on 16 May 2025, playing the son of the head of a household opposite Guru Randhawa's character Sherry. Promoting the film in Amritsar, he told The Tribune that it carries a message and speaks of Punjab's water and environment, concerns that run through his songwriting too.

Honours and other work

Alongside the Brit Asia award of 2010, the four World Music Awards of 2014 and the two daf BAMA awards of 2017, Maan's standing rests on his live reputation: he has performed across Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America and the Middle East, often playing to diaspora audiences for whom his village centred songs are a direct line home. His habit of releasing live albums alongside studio albums reflects how central the stage is to his career.

Away from music and film, Maan is the ambassador of One Hope, One Chance, a non profit organisation based in Punjab. He also runs his own clothing label, The Babbu Maan Store, which has grown to more than twenty stores across Punjab. The label shares its name and its imagery with his music, and it is run as part of the same independent setup as his albums and films: everything under his own name, on his own terms.
