Early life
Jaswinder Singh Bains was born on 1 April 1975 in the village of Durgapur in Nawanshahr district, Punjab. When he was five years old, his family emigrated to Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Growing up in Surrey, he fell in love with hip-hop culture while remaining rooted in Punjabi folk — a combination that would define his career. He idolized the folk legend Kuldeep Manak and dreamed of blending the two worlds.
Career
In 1993, working with producer Sukshinder Shinda, he released his debut album Ghugian Da Jorra, fusing bhangra rhythms with hip-hop attitude. It was a sensation among the diaspora and established him as the 'Crown Prince of Bhangra'. Over the years he released more than a dozen studio albums, including the religious album Singha Di Kaum Bahadur Hai, Rambo (2008) and Maharajas (2011), on which he fulfilled a dream by collaborating with his idol, the late Kuldeep Manak.
His reach kept growing: his song 'Sat Rangey' featured on the soundtrack of the Hollywood film Deadpool, he collaborated with Snoop Dogg, and the New York Times profiled him. In 2016 he became the first South Asian inducted into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, earning a star on Vancouver's StarWalk on Granville Street.
Film career
Jazzy B has acted in Punjabi films including Shaheed Udham Singh (2000) and Best of Luck (2013), and made cameos in Bollywood films. A stunt accident during the filming of Romeo Ranjha (2014) left him with serious injuries — he later described it as a near-death experience.
Personal life
He is married to Hardeep Kaur and has a son and a daughter. Now based in Birmingham, England, he remains active with new music, including the album Ustad Ji King Forever.
Legacy
Before the streaming era made Punjabi music global, Jazzy B did it with cassettes and concerts — mixing the swagger of hip-hop with the dhol of Punjab and taking bhangra to the New York Times, the BC Hall of Fame and Hollywood soundtracks. The 'Crown Prince of Bhangra' title was earned, not given.
