Mika Singh: Bollywood Party Song Singer

Mika Singh is an Indian singer, rapper and actor from a Punjabi family, best known for Bollywood party anthems such as Mauja Hi Mauja, Singh Is Kinng, Dhinka Chika and Chinta Ta Chita. Born Amrik Singh, the youngest brother of bhangra star Daler Mehndi, he began in kirtan, broke through with his 1998 pop song Sawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag, and became one of the most recognisable voices in Hindi film music.

Early life: a kirtan childhood

Amrik Singh was born on 10 June 1977 in Durgapur, West Bengal, the youngest of eight children, among them six sons. His family roots are in Punjab. His father, Ajmer Singh, was a trained classical musician who sang kirtan at Patna Sahib Gurdwara, and Mika and his elder brother Daler Mehndi grew up inspired by him. He was raised in Patna and in Patiala, and music filled the house from the start: he was playing tabla at eight, harmonium at twelve and guitar at fourteen.

At fifteen he moved to Delhi and began his working life as a kirtan singer. He composed Dar Di Rabb Rabb Kardi for his brother Daler, and the song became a big hit, but his own voice was turned down by music directors who found it unconventional. Rather than wait for permission, he decided to release his own album.

How did Mika Singh break through?

He broke through in 1998, at twenty one, with Sawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag, the song from his first album that made him an overnight name in Indian pop. The albums that followed kept him in that world: Ishq Brandy in 2000, Gabru in 2001, Jaan Qurban in 2002 and Something Something in 2006. The voice directors had rejected turned out to be the point: rough, nasal and instantly identifiable in a crowd of smoother singers.

Film work arrived alongside the albums. He sang Dil Mein Baji Guitar and the remix of Dil Tod Ke Na Ja in 2006, and in 2007 came the year that changed his scale: Ganpat in Shootout at Lokhandwala and Mauja Hi Mauja in Jab We Met, a song that put his voice in every celebration in the country.

Bollywood party anthems

From 2008 onward Mika became Bollywood's first call for a party song. He sang the title energy of Singh Is Kinng, Oye Lucky in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, Ibn-e-Batuta in Ishqiya, Dhanno in Housefull, Dhinka Chika in Ready, Subah Hone Na De in Desi Boyz, Pungi in Agent Vinod and Chinta Ta Chita in Rowdy Rathore. Few playback careers are so closely tied to one job in a film, the moment the story stops and the dancing starts, and for more than a decade that moment very often sounded like him.

He kept recording in other languages too, including Bengali, Telugu and Kannada film songs, and kept releasing his own material, from the album Mika Singh Is King in 2014 to Majnu in 2022. His early hit has been revived more than once, including a film version in Ginny Weds Sunny in 2020, sung again by Mika himself.

Television, acting and live shows

Mika acted in the Punjabi film Mitti in 2010, then in the Hindi film Loot in 2011, and took the lead in Balwinder Singh Famous Ho Gaya in 2014. On television he was a team captain on Music Ka Maha Muqqabla, a judge on The Voice India in 2015 and a mentor and judge on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in 2016, and in 2022 he headlined his own reality show, Swayamvar: Mika Di Vohti. Live, he performed in the sold out Bollywood Showstoppers show at The O2 Arena in London in 2014, and at the Sandwell and Birmingham Mela in 2016, his biggest outdoor concert setting at the time.

What is Mika Singh best known for?

He is best known for a voice that turns a film song into a party. The path behind it is less obvious: a youngest son from a kirtan singing family, trained on tabla, harmonium and guitar as a boy, rejected for the same voice that later made him famous, who released his own album and let the audience decide. For Punjabi listeners he is also a link between two worlds, Daler Mehndi's younger brother who carried a family sound rooted in Punjab and Patna Sahib into the centre of Bollywood.
