Dhami Steps In as Mika Seeks Daler Apology

The row over the on-stage reprimand of Daler Mehndi in Uttarakhand reached the state's Chief Minister on Friday. Pushkar Singh Dhami spoke to Daler's younger brother, singer Mika Singh, about the incident at the Kunjapuri fair in New Tehri, where Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal interrupted Daler's performance and suggested the veteran singer was intoxicated. According to PTI reports, Dhami told Mika the misunderstanding could be resolved amicably through dialogue, and Hindustan Times reported the Chief Minister also reached out to Daler Mehndi himself.

Mika said he knows Dhami well and described him as a down-to-earth person, but his demand of the minister did not change. 'My only humble request to him is to please ask Uniyal ji to make a simple video clarifying his statement and apologising to Daler Bhai,' Mika said. Earlier in the day he had renewed the demand for an apology, pointing out that Daler had stepped in at the last minute to perform after another artist, Sunanda Sharma, fell ill, and that the minister should be grateful rather than accusatory. Mika has repeatedly said his brother does not drink alcohol, that the allegation against him is wrong, and that artists deserve dignity and respect. He has also appealed to Dhami to look into the matter.

How the row began

On Sunday night, Daler Mehndi was performing at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair at Narendra Nagar in New Tehri when Uniyal, the local MLA and a member of the organising committee, came on stage. In a video that went viral, the minister questioned whether Daler was singing live or lip-syncing, suggested he was under the influence, and asked how he would sing when he could not speak properly; the singer was heard saying sorry. Mika later revealed Daler has been unwell for two to three years and is recovering from a recent operation, yet kept his performance commitments. Uniyal, for his part, told PTI on Wednesday that the singer should have informed the organisers in advance that he was unwell and should not have come to perform; he said that at the time he thought Daler was under the influence of some substance, while accepting that no medical examination was conducted and that he later learnt the singer was unwell.

The industry closes ranks

The clip brought a wave of support for the 59-year-old singer, known for 'Tunak Tunak Tun' and 'Bolo Ta Ra Ra'. Singers and actors including Anupam Kher, Badshah, Kapil Sharma, Shaan, Gurdas Maan and Sona Mohapatra expressed solidarity, with Kher saying he knows Daler does not drink and has not been keeping well. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees also appealed to the Prime Minister and to Dhami for a sensitive handling of such matters. Mika has additionally challenged the minister to make public the payment records for the event, questioning whether the reported Rs 35 lakh fee was paid by cash or cheque. Uniyal has not apologised so far.

What happens next

With the Chief Minister now personally in touch with the family, the question is whether Uniyal records the clarification and apology Mika has asked for, or whether the state government finds another way to close the matter. Dhami's message, as reported, was that the misunderstanding can be settled through dialogue. For a singer who built Punjabi pop's global sound, the episode has already become a wider argument about how public representatives treat artists on public stages.

ਐਤਵਾਰ ਰਾਤ ਨਰਿੰਦਰ ਨਗਰ, ਨਵੀਂ ਟਿਹਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਧਪੀਠ ਮਾਂ ਕੁੰਜਾਪੁਰੀ ਸੈਰ ਸਪਾਟਾ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਮੇਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਲੇਰ ਮਹਿੰਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਜਦੋਂ ਸਥਾਨਕ ਵਿਧਾਇਕ ਅਤੇ ਆਯੋਜਨ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਦੇ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਉਨਿਆਲ ਸਟੇਜ ਉੱਤੇ ਆ ਗਿਆ। ਵਾਇਰਲ ਹੋਈ ਵੀਡੀਓ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਸਵਾਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਕੀ ਦਲੇਰ ਲਾਈਵ ਗਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਲਿਪ ਸਿੰਕ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਸੰਕੇਤ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਠੀਕ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੋਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਗਾਵੇਗਾ ਕਿਵੇਂ। ਗਾਇਕ ਨੂੰ ਸੌਰੀ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਮਿੱਕਾ ਨੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਦਲੇਰ ਦੋ ਤੋਂ ਤਿੰਨ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਮਾਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹਾਲ ਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਏ ਅਪਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਤੋਂ ਠੀਕ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਦੇ ਵਾਅਦੇ ਨਿਭਾਏ। ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਉਨਿਆਲ ਨੇ ਬੁੱਧਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਪੀਟੀਆਈ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਗਾਇਕ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਦੱਸ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਬਿਮਾਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਕਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਦਲੇਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੇ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਕਿ ਕੋਈ ਮੈਡੀਕਲ ਜਾਂਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਾ ਕਿ ਗਾਇਕ ਬਿਮਾਰ ਸੀ।

ਹੁਣ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਪਰਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਵਾਲ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕੀ ਉਨਿਆਲ ਉਹ ਸਫ਼ਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਫ਼ੀ ਵਾਲੀ ਵੀਡੀਓ ਬਣਾਵੇਗਾ, ਜਿਸਦੀ ਮਿੱਕਾ ਨੇ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਜਾਂ ਰਾਜ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਮਾਮਲਾ ਬੰਦ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਰਸਤਾ ਲੱਭੇਗੀ। ਰਿਪੋਰਟਾਂ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਧਾਮੀ ਦਾ ਸੁਨੇਹਾ ਇਹੀ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਗਲਤਫ਼ਹਿਮੀ ਦੂਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਪੌਪ ਦੀ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਗਾਇਕ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਘਟਨਾ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡੀ ਬਹਿਸ ਬਣ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਨਤਕ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦੇ ਜਨਤਕ ਸਟੇਜਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਕਲਾਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਪੇਸ਼ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
