Yo Yo Honey Singh: Punjabi Hip-Hop Star

Yo Yo Honey Singh (born Hirdesh Singh on 15 March 1983) is an Indian rapper, music producer and actor from a Sikh family with roots in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. His 2011 album International Villager and the 2012 hit "Brown Rang" made him one of the biggest names in Punjabi and Hindi pop.

Early life

Hirdesh Singh comes from a Sikh family from Hoshiarpur in Punjab's Doaba region. Hindustan Times, The Hindu and BBC News describe him as born in Punjab and raised in Delhi, while Wikipedia gives his birthplace as the Karampura area of West Delhi, so the exact place of birth is reported differently. All the accounts agree that he grew up in Delhi, where he studied at Guru Nanak Public School.

He has described his Delhi neighbourhood as the place that shaped his sound. He began as a college DJ and then moved into production, spending years as a small-time producer in Punjab before deciding he had to go beyond the state to be heard.

Career

Singh's recording debut came in 2006 with the song "Glassy", made with singer Ashok Masti. He started getting attention as a producer, and his Punjabi folk-meets-hip-hop sound, with dhol beats and string melodies, broke through with the album International Villager in 2011. According to BBC News, "Brown Rang" became YouTube's most-watched video in 2012. Hindustan Times lists the Jaz Dhami collaboration "High Heels" in that year's top trending videos too.

He moved into acting with Mirza: The Untold Story (2012), which earned him the PTC Punjabi Film Award for Best Male Debut, followed by Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22 (2013) alongside Amrinder Gill. In Bollywood he sang and produced songs for stars such as Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan, and in 2012 he was reported to have been paid a record fee for a Hindi film song. He teamed up with Gippy Grewal on "Angreji Beat" and released the album Desi Kalakaar in 2014.

He later stepped away from public life for several years. Returning in recent years, he released the album Glory in 2024 and was the subject of the Netflix documentary Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous in December 2024. In 2025 he began his Millionaire India Tour across ten Indian cities.

His awards include several PTC Punjabi music awards, the 2012 BritAsia TV Award for Best International Act and the 2019 IIFA Award for Best Music Director for Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. His lyrics have also drawn criticism over the years, and he has denied some songs attributed to him.
