Badshah: DJ Waley Babu rapper from Delhi

Badshah (born Aditya Prateek Singh Sisodia, 19 November 1985) is an Indian rapper, singer and songwriter from Delhi who helped carry Indian hip hop into the mainstream. Born in Delhi to a father from Haryana and a mother from Punjab, he raps in Hindi, Punjabi, Haryanvi and English, and his party records, Saturday Saturday, DJ Waley Babu, Kar Gayi Chull and Kala Chashma, became some of the most played Indian songs of their decade. Before the fame he was an engineering student in Chandigarh, where the Punjabi music around him turned a school choir singer into a rapper.

Delhi childhood and a Chandigarh detour

He grew up in Delhi and went to Bal Bharati Public School in Pitampura, where he sang in the school choir. Music was a hobby until college: he enrolled to study civil engineering at Punjab Engineering College in Chandigarh, and it was there, surrounded by the new Punjabi pop of the 2000s, that he began writing raps in earnest. He has often said that if rap had not worked out he might have aimed at the Indian Administrative Service instead. The engineering degree was left behind; the name he started with, Cool Equal, was left behind too.

Mafia Mundeer and the name Badshah

From 2006 he worked with Yo Yo Honey Singh and the crew known as Mafia Mundeer. It was Singh, by Badshah's own telling, who renamed him: the young rapper kept his own hours so completely that he lived, in Singh's phrase, like a badshah, a king. Tracks from those years, including Get Up Jawani on Singh's album International Villager (2011), carry his writing and voice. In late 2011 and early 2012 the two split. Both men have since given their own accounts of who wrote what in the crew's songs, and the claims and counter-claims about credits, including for Brown Rang, are still argued by their fans; what is not disputed is that each went on to a major career of his own.

Saturday Saturday and the Bollywood door

The solo breakthrough came with Saturday Saturday, released in 2012 and picked up for the film Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania in 2014. Bollywood opened at once: Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai for Khoobsurat ran at every party in the country and eventually crossed a billion views on YouTube. DJ Waley Babu with Aastha Gill in 2015 made him a household name, Wakhra Swag with Navv Inder won Punjabi music awards, and Kar Gayi Chull, Kala Chashma and The Breakup Song fixed his formula in Hindi cinema: a folk-flavoured hook, a rap in the middle, and a chorus nobody could unhear.

What is Badshah's biggest song?

Measured by views, Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai leads, with more than a billion on YouTube. Measured by noise, it is Paagal (2019), which drew 74.8 million views in its first 24 hours: YouTube declined to certify a world record after it emerged that his label, Sony Music India, had bought advertising that directed viewers to the video, a common industry practice that Badshah has never denied. Between the two measures sits DJ Waley Babu, the song that made the rapper a star in his own right and still opens his concerts.

Albums, acting and the judge's chair

His debut studio album O.N.E. (Original Never Ends) arrived in 2018, followed by The Power of Dreams of a Kid (2020), the Retropanda EP (2022), 3:00 AM Sessions (2023) and Ek Tha Raja (2024), and he made his acting debut in the 2019 film Khandaani Shafakhana. Television made him a face as well as a voice: he has judged MTV Hustle, Indian Idol, Dil Hai Hindustani and India's Got Talent, and his collaboration Voodoo with J Balvin and Tainy took his sound to Latin pop's biggest stage. Businesses followed the music, from restaurants in Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh to brand ventures, but the centre of the enterprise is still the hook: three minutes, one chorus, all of India singing it.

Family and the Punjab connection

Badshah's Punjabi connection runs through his family rather than his birthplace. He was born and raised in Delhi; his mother is from Punjab and his father from Haryana, and the mix of the two cultures is audible in records that move between Punjabi, Haryanvi and Hindi in a single verse. He married Jasmine Masih in 2012; they have a daughter, born in 2017, and divorced in 2020. His younger sister Aprajita has been part of his professional circle. For a Kosh that records Punjab's people, he belongs here honestly: not a son of Punjab's soil, but one of the biggest carriers of its language and sound in modern Indian pop.
