Imran Khan: Amplifier and Satisfya singer

Imran Khan (born 28 May 1984) is a Dutch singer and rapper from The Hague who sings in Punjabi and English, and whose songs Amplifier and Satisfya have each passed one billion views on YouTube. Born to a Punjabi family from Gujranwala, he fused British bhangra with American hip hop and became the defining urban Punjabi act of the internet age. He is the singer, and not the Pakistani cricketer and former prime minister who shares his name.

A Gujranwala family in The Hague

Imran Khan was born on 28 May 1984 in The Hague, Netherlands, where his parents had settled after emigrating from Gujranwala in Pakistani Punjab. He grew up with two brothers and a sister in a Punjabi Muslim household, hearing the language and its music all around him. The family's Gujranwala roots kept Punjab close even in the Netherlands. He started making music in his late teens, learning the trade of the urban acts he admired.

Before the breakthrough he spent years on the edges of the scene, performing wherever the diaspora gathered. The patience mattered: when Prestige Records signed him in late 2007, he arrived with a finished sound rather than a promise.

Ni Nachleh and the Unforgettable year

In late 2007 Khan signed with Prestige Records and released his debut single Ni Nachleh, which reached number one on the UK Asian charts. His second single Amplifier, released on 12 July 2009, exploded online and drew two million YouTube views in its first week. A fortnight later, on 27 July 2009, his debut album Unforgettable arrived: fifteen tracks produced by Eren E and Hakan Ozan, including Amplifier, Bewafa, Pata Chalgea, Aaja We Mahiya and Gora Gora Rang.

The album made him the biggest name in urban Punjabi music. It was nominated for Best Album at the 2010 UK Asian Music Awards and won Best Album at the 2010 Brit Asia TV Music Awards, while Khan himself took Best Desi Act at the UK awards and Male Musical Artist of the Year at the Anokhi Awards.

Those early songs set his template: Punjabi verses about cars, clubs and confidence, delivered half sung and half rapped over polished urban beats. It sounded like the diaspora itself, at home in The Hague and Gujranwala at once, and a generation of young Punjabis abroad adopted it as their sound.

Bewafa, released on 30 August 2009 and produced by Hakan Ozan, showed his other side: a slow, wounded love song that has passed 300 million views and remains a staple of Punjabi weddings and heartbreak playlists alike. It proved the club singer could break hearts as easily as he filled dance floors.

How did Satisfya pass a billion views?

In 2011 Khan left Prestige Records and founded his own label, IK Records, betting that he could reach his audience directly. The bet paid off on 9 May 2013 with Satisfya, produced by Eren E, whose video, directed by David Zennie, placed him in a yellow Lamborghini beside a cheetah. Satisfya became his signature song and its video his most watched, passing a billion views; Amplifier has since crossed the same mark.

Satisfya won Best Urban Asian Single at the 2013 Brit Asia TV Music Awards. Two years later Khan made his Bollywood singing debut with Let's Celebrate for the film Tevar, and his single Imaginary, filmed at the Los Angeles house of the singer Akon, topped the Asian Music Chart and won him three Brit Asia awards in 2015, for Best Urban Asian Act, Best Music Video and Best UK Single.

The IK Records years

Since then Khan has released singles at his own pace rather than chasing albums: Hattrick in 2016, Knightridah in 2018, which again topped the Asian Music Chart, M.O.B. and They Don't Like It in 2021, On My Way in 2022, and a run of 2024 singles including Deposit, Radioactive and Humankind. He tours internationally, from the Takeover Tour of the United States in 2011 to an Unforgettable tour of India in 2022, and his catalogue has passed two billion views on his own channel.

A decade and a half after Amplifier, Khan remains the reference point for urban Punjabi pop: a singer from the diaspora who never moved to Mumbai or Lahore, yet outsang both industries from the Netherlands. For the diaspora generation that grew up on Amplifier, he is not one singer among many but the sound of growing up itself.
