Early life

Kamaljit Singh Jhooti was born on 26 March 1981 in Hounslow, West London, to Punjabi Sikh parents Sharan Singh Jhooti and Bindi Kaur Jhooti. He grew up in Southall, started performing with a cousin at eleven under the name Nicky J — the source of 'Jay' — and did well enough at school to earn a place at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. He left medical school in 2003 to pursue music full time, sending a demo to producer Rishi Rich.

Southall in the 1990s was one of the most Punjabi places outside Punjab, and Jay Sean grew up bilingual in its culture — British schoolboy by day, immersed in bhangra and Bollywood at home. Performing with his cousin as 'Nicky J' at eleven gave him his first taste of a stage, and his academic success kept another door open: medicine. The decision to leave Barts and The London School of Medicine in 2003 was a gamble his family did not take lightly, but the demo he sent to Rishi Rich changed everything.

Career

Rich signed him, and the Rishi Rich Project — Jay Sean, Juggy D and Rich — released 'Dance with You (Nachna Tere Naal)' in 2003, which reached No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart and helped invent the bhangra-R&B fusion sound. Signed to Virgin Records, Sean scored two UK top-ten solo hits in 2004, 'Eyes on You' (No. 6) and 'Stolen' (No. 4), both from his debut album Me Against Myself. The album sold moderately in Britain but moved more than two million copies across Asia.

After parting with Virgin in 2006 he founded Jayded Records, returning in 2008 with 'Ride It' (UK No. 11) and the album My Own Way, which reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart. Signed to Cash Money Records in the United States, he released 'Down' featuring Lil Wayne in 2009. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 — a first for a solo artist of South Asian origin and for a UK urban act — and sold more than six million copies worldwide. The follow-up, 'Do You Remember' with Sean Paul and Lil Jon, reached the US top ten.

The Virgin Records years made him a UK star, but the move to America made him a global one. Signing with Cash Money Records — then the hottest label in hip-hop, home to Lil Wayne — put a British Punjabi singer in rooms where no South Asian artist had been. 'Down' was engineered for that moment: a pop-R&B record with Sean's unmistakable vocal tone, and Lil Wayne's feature gave it instant credibility with American radio.

The success brought its own pressures. Follow-up albums and singles kept him on the charts — 'Do You Remember' with Sean Paul and Lil Jon reached the US top ten — but the pop landscape was shifting toward EDM, and Sean's later releases, while respected, never quite repeated the 'Down' phenomenon. He continued to tour the world, particularly in Asia, where Me Against Myself had made him a superstar.

Major works

Me Against Myself (2004), My Own Way (2008) and All or Nothing (2009) form the core of his catalogue, with the singles 'Down', 'Do You Remember', 'Ride It', 'Stolen' and 'Eyes on You' as its landmarks. 'Down' remains the seventh best-selling song of 2009 in the US.

Me Against Myself remains his artistic signature — the album that fused bhangra, R&B and pop into something new — while All or Nothing houses the twin American smashes 'Down' and 'Do You Remember'. 'Ride It' enjoyed a second life years later as a viral dance track.

Personal life

Sean is married to singer Thara Natalie and has two children. He continues to record and tour internationally.

Sean married singer Thara Natalie in 2009, and the couple have two children. He has spoken about balancing fatherhood with a touring career and about his pride in his Punjabi Sikh heritage.

Legacy

Jay Sean proved that a British Punjabi singer could not only enter the American mainstream but top it. His path — from the Asian Underground to the Billboard summit — remains the template for South Asian crossover success in Western pop.

Every British-Asian artist who has since chased an American breakthrough walks a path Jay Sean cut. Topping the Billboard Hot 100 as a solo South Asian artist was not just a personal triumph — it was proof of concept for an entire community.
