Mandy Takhar: Sahiba of Mirza, Pollywood star

Mandy Takhar (born 1 May 1987) is a British Punjabi actress from Wolverhampton, England, who crossed continents to become one of Pollywood's leading ladies. As Sahiba in Mirza: The Untold Story she played one half of Punjab's most loved tragic romance, and across a career of more than fifteen years she has worked in Punjabi, Hindi and Tamil cinema.

From Wolverhampton to the drama school

Mandeep Kaur Takhar was born on 1 May 1987 in Wolverhampton in the West Midlands, and was born and raised there in a traditional Sikh family. Her roots lie across the world in Maliana, a small village near Phagwara in Punjab. At seventeen she moved to London to study drama at Kingston University, and in 2009 she left the United Kingdom altogether to try her luck in the Indian film industry.

It was a bold move for a young woman whose family had built its life in England, but it joined the two halves of her own story: the Punjab of her parents' memory and the stage training of her London years.

Many British Punjabi actors of her generation stayed in Britain and waited for British roles. Takhar chose the harder market: Punjab itself, where she would compete with actresses who had grown up speaking the language on screen.

Ekam, Mirza and a star is made

Her debut came in 2010 with Ekam: Son of Soil, in which she played Navneet opposite the singer and actor Babbu Maan, and won wide appreciation. In 2012 came the role that made her name: Sahiba in Mirza: The Untold Story, opposite Gippy Grewal, then among the most expensive Punjabi films ever made. Her portrayal earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the PTC Punjabi Film Awards. The same year she also appeared in the Hindi comedy Bumboo and in Saadi Wakhri Hai Shaan.

The successes followed quickly. In 2013 she played Simmy, a schoolteacher, in the comedy Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22 with Amrinder Gill and Honey Singh, and was named the Most Prominent and Popular Face and Youth Icon of 2012-13 at the 6th Punjabi Film and Music Festival. The same year she crossed into Tamil cinema with Biriyani, playing Maya opposite Karthi in Venkat Prabhu's comedy thriller.

What is Mandy Takhar's best-known role?

For most viewers the answer is still Sahiba. The story of Mirza and Sahiba, a love that ends in betrayal and death beneath a jand tree, is Punjab's own Romeo and Juliet, and Takhar's performance remains the one she is most identified with. The tale is told in every Punjabi schoolbook and folk song, so the role carried unusual weight for an actress in only her second film. It also announced something new: a diaspora actress, raised in the English Midlands, carrying a classical Punjabi tragedy on her shoulders.

Fifteen years a leading lady

Takhar stayed at the top of the industry through the decade. She played Jasmine opposite Diljit Dosanjh in the record-breaking Sardaarji (2015), a serious Binder in Gippy Grewal's Ardaas (2016), and Naseeb Kaur in Rabb Da Radio (2017) opposite Tarsem Jassar, winning Best Supporting Actress at the PTC Punjabi Film Awards for Sardaarji. Later films ranged from the hockey drama Khido Khundi (2018) and Sardar Mohammad to Saak, Lukan Michi and Band Vaaje in 2019, Yes I Am Student (2021) opposite Sidhu Moose Wala, Television (2022), Vadda Ghar (2024) and the 2025 releases Six Each and Enna Nu Rehna Sehna Ni Aaunda.

She has stayed a familiar face beyond films too, co-hosting the Brit Asia TV Music Awards in 2017 and appearing in hit music videos, from Ammy Virk's Tod Da E Dil in 2020 to Honey Singh's One Thousand Miles in 2025.

Her career has become a template for the diaspora route into Pollywood: train in Britain, debut opposite an established star, then prove the range to stay. On that measure, Takhar's fifteen years at or near the top of the cast list is itself the achievement. That she did it while keeping her base in England, flying in for each production, makes the run more unusual still.

Personal life

Takhar married Shekhar Kaushal on 13 February 2024, in ceremonies that followed both Hindu and Sikh rituals. In January 2026 the couple's marriage ended, after a Delhi court allowed the first motion of their divorce by mutual consent, as reported by the Indian press at the time.
