History

Phagwara's modern story begins with the Grand Trunk Road and the railway. A market town of the Doaba under the Kapurthala princely state, it was transformed after 1947, when Partition refugees — many of them skilled traders and artisans — settled here and built small industries: sugar, rice mills, hosiery and knitwear. The town's position on the GT Road between Jalandhar and Ludhiana gave its factories access to markets across north India, and Phagwara became one of the Doaba's classic industrial towns.

The twenty-first century added a second identity. Lovely Professional University, established in 2005 at Chaheru on the town's outskirts, grew into one of India's largest single-campus private universities, drawing tens of thousands of students from across India and abroad and reshaping Phagwara's economy around education, hostels and services.

Geography & people

Phagwara sits on the GT Road (NH-44) at about 234 metres above sea level, roughly midway between Jalandhar and Ludhiana, with the railway main line running alongside. The municipal council counted nearly 1.2 lakh people in 2011. Punjabi dominates, with Hindi widely spoken in the industrial areas. The town is a microcosm of the Doaba's migration story — many families have relatives in Canada and Britain, and NRI investment is visible in its newer colonies.

The surrounding land is prime Doaba farmland: wheat and paddy, with sugarcane feeding the town's mills.

Places of interest

Phagwara's sights are industrial and educational rather than ancient: the mill belt along the highway, the sprawling LPU campus at Chaheru, and the town's busy bazaars. The Gurdwara Sukhchain Sahib on the town's edge is a local place of reverence. Kapurthala's palaces and Sultanpur Lodhi are easy day trips.

Notable people

Phagwara's notable figures are its builders — the post-Partition industrialists who raised its mills and hosiery units from nothing, and the educators behind its university boom. The town's story is entrepreneurial: a refugee-built industrial base that reinvented itself as an education hub within two generations.
