Goraya is a small highway town in Jalandhar district, Doaba, on the Grand Trunk Road between Phagwara and Phillaur. A nagar panchayat, it lives off the highway — dhabas, transport workshops and a grain market serving the surrounding villages. Its position on the historic Sher Shah Suri Marg gives it a past far older than its modest present.

History
Goraya's history is the history of the road it stands on. The Grand Trunk Road — the Sher Shah Suri Marg — has run through this spot for nearly five centuries, carrying Mughal caravans, Sikh armies and British mail carts. Like the string of sarais and market towns along it, Goraya grew as a halting place: a place to rest animals, change horses and trade grain. The railway's Jalandhar–Ludhiana main line runs close by, reinforcing the town's role as a transport node.
In the twentieth century Goraya settled into its modern form as a nagar panchayat and mandi town of Jalandhar district, its bazaar serving the villages between Phagwara and Phillaur. The highway's widening into NH-44 brought dhabas, fuel stations and transport businesses that now dominate its main street.
Geography & people
Goraya lies on the GT Road at about 240 metres above sea level, a few kilometres south of Phagwara and north of Phillaur. Punjabi is the everyday language; the town's population is a mix of Hindu and Sikh communities with the floating population of a highway town — drivers, traders and migrant workers. The surrounding fields grow wheat and paddy in the classic Doaba rotation.
The town's life follows the highway's rhythm: busiest at dawn and dusk when the mandi and the dhabas fill, quiet in the afternoon heat.
Places of interest
Goraya's interest lies in its highway culture: the old dhabas along the GT Road, the grain market in season, and the town's gurdwaras and temples. Phillaur's fort is a short drive south, Phagwara's industrial belt a short drive north — Goraya sits between the Doaba's two better-known towns, a convenient halt for travellers.
Notable people
Goraya has no nationally famous natives; its people are highway people — transporters, dhaba owners, commission agents and mechanics. The town's contribution is the unglamorous infrastructure of movement: the food, fuel and repairs that keep the Grand Trunk Road running through the Doaba.
