Kunal Nayyar: Raj of The Big Bang Theory

Kunal Nayyar (born 30 April 1981) is a British-born actor raised in New Delhi, from a Punjabi family, best known as the astrophysicist Raj Koothrappali in The Big Bang Theory. The sitcom ran for twelve seasons and made him, at his peak, one of the highest paid television actors in the world, according to Forbes.

London-born, Delhi-raised

Nayyar was born in London on 30 April 1981 to a Punjabi family. When he was a small child the family moved back to India, and he grew up in New Delhi, attending St. Columba's School in Gole Market, where he played badminton for the school team. That Delhi childhood stayed with him: his accent, often assumed by American audiences to be performed, is simply his own, a point he later made the title of his book. In 1999 he left for the United States to study, carrying a schoolboy's love of the stage into a country where he knew almost no one.

A finance degree, then the stage

At the University of Portland in Oregon, Nayyar studied finance and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration, but the campus theatre pulled him in another direction. He acted in university productions, took part in the American College Theater Festival and decided to train properly, completing a Master of Fine Arts in acting at Temple University in Philadelphia. Small screen and stage roles followed, including work in London theatre and a part in the play Cotton Candy, along with early American television appearances. To support himself at university he took whatever work came, including cleaning jobs on campus, and his first professional screen credit came in the 2004 film S.C.I.E.N.C.E., followed by a guest appearance in the crime drama NCIS, playing a terrorist in a single episode. The training was thorough, but like most young actors he was still waiting for the one role that changes everything.

Raj Koothrappali changes everything

It arrived in 2007, when Nayyar was cast as Rajesh Koothrappali, the shy Indian astrophysicist at Caltech, in the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory. The show grew into one of the biggest comedies on television, running for 279 episodes until 2019, and its ensemble became global stars. Forbes ranked Nayyar the world's third highest paid television actor in 2015, with earnings of 20 million dollars, and again in 2018, with 23.5 million dollars. By its final season the show had become the longest running multi-camera comedy in American television history. For millions of viewers across the world, Raj was the first Punjabi character they had ever followed week after week, played by an actor who had grown up in Delhi and spoke in his own voice.

What has Kunal Nayyar done beyond The Big Bang Theory?

Plenty, and much of it in his own voice. He voiced Gupta in Ice Age: Continental Drift in 2012 and Guy Diamond in the Trolls films, and an asteroid, 8627 Kunalnayyar, is named after him. In 2015 he published a book of autobiographical essays, Yes, My Accent Is Real, about growing up between Delhi and America and finding his way into acting. He won praise for dramatic work too: his performance as Sandeep Singh, a convicted murderer giving a police interview, in the Netflix series Criminal: UK earned him a BAFTA Television Award nomination in 2021. The episode is a single long police interview, carried almost entirely by his performance. He returned as Guy Diamond in the Trolls sequels, and in 2022 he took a leading dramatic role as Aadesh Chopra in the Apple TV+ thriller series Suspicion. He has also returned to the stage and continues to act in film and television on both sides of the Atlantic.

Family and life between three cities

In December 2011 Nayyar married Neha Kapur, a model and former Femina Miss India, in New Delhi. The couple divide their time between Los Angeles, where his career is based, and homes in London and New Delhi. For the Punjabi diaspora, Nayyar's story has a particular warmth: a London-born boy raised in Delhi, educated in America, who reached the top of global television without sanding down the accent or the background he grew up with. He remains one of the most recognisable Punjabi faces in world entertainment.
