Early life

Karamjit Anmol was born Karamjit Singh Benipal on 2 January 1972 in Ganduan, a village in the Sunam tehsil of Sangrur district, Punjab. He was the son of Sadhu Singh and Murti Kaur. Music entered his life almost as early as memory: he began formal music lessons at the age of six, and he was the boy in school who mimicked neighbours, friends and teachers for laughs. He studied at Seaba International Public School and graduated from SUS College, Sunam.

While still in the twelfth standard he released his first music album, Aashiq Bhaaji. In college he met Bhagwant Maan — the comedian who would become a close friend and collaborator — and began doing theatre with him. After graduation he took professional training in music, but the stage had already claimed him.

Career

Anmol worked his way up through Punjabi theatre and comedy plays, including OMG!! Oh My God and Naughty Baba in Town, which toured Canada, the United States, New Zealand and Australia. He sang on film soundtracks from the start — his voice appears on songs for Main Tu Assi Tussi (2006), Singh Vs Kaur (2013), Jatt Boys Putt Jattan De (2013), Nikka Zaildar (2016) and many more.

His film acting breakthrough came with Jihne Mera Dil Luteya (2011), and he became a fixture of Punjabi ensemble comedies: Carry on Jatta 2 (2017), Laavaan Phere (2018), Vadhayiyaan Ji Vadhayiyaan (2018), Mar Gaye Oye Loko (2018) and Muklawa (2019). His turn in Main Teri Tu Mera won him the PTC Best Comedian of the Year award in 2017, confirming his place among the industry's top comic actors.

He also moved into production, backing Punjabi films and comedy tours that carried his stage work to diaspora audiences in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. His songs continued to appear in the films he acted in, making him one of the few Punjabi performers who could claim a credit on both the cast list and the soundtrack of the same film.

Major works

As an actor, his most visible roles came in the big ensemble hits of the 2010s — Carry on Jatta 2, Laavaan Phere and Manje Bistre — where his earthy comic timing stood out even in star-packed casts. As a singer, his film songs include Yaara Ve, Waqt, Baagi, Bhola and Channa Mereya, sung for films he often also acted in. He has also produced films, completing the move from performer to all-round filmmaker.

Personal life

Anmol married Gurjot Kaur on 4 June 2000. The couple have two sons, Armaan Singh Benipal and Gurshaan Singh Benipal. He remains based in Punjab and is known in the industry for staying close to his village roots.

Legacy

Karamjit Anmol's career is a model of the multi-skilled Punjabi entertainer: singer, mimic, stage comic, film actor, producer. Coming from a small village with no film connections, he built his name through theatre tours and sheer volume of work, and his PTC award recognised what audiences already knew — that he is among the funniest men in Punjabi cinema.
