Rajvir Jawanda: Surname singer, life & films

Rajvir Jawanda (20 June 1990 to 8 October 2025) was a Punjabi singer and actor from Pona village in Ludhiana district, who first served as a Punjab Police constable before Kali Jawande Di in 2016 made him a household voice, followed by Surname, Kangani and Sardari, and film roles in Jind Jaan and Mindo Taseeldarni.

Early life in Pona

Rajvir Jawanda was born on 20 June 1990 and grew up in Pona village, near Jagraon in Ludhiana district. His family was closely tied to public service. His father, Karam Singh, served in the Punjab Police as an Assistant Sub-Inspector, and his mother, Parmjeet Kaur, later served as sarpanch of the village. Village accounts remember a house where discipline and duty were part of daily life, and where a young boy was already listening closely to the folk singers and rural performers who passed through.

His first small moment in front of an audience is still told in the village. When a Doordarshan team came to Pona to shoot a programme, the young Rajvir sang a few lines for the crew. Their praise stayed with him, and he began to practise singing regularly. He studied at Sanmati Vimal Jain School in Jagraon, graduated from DAV College, Jagraon, and went on to earn a master's degree in Theatre and Television from Punjabi University, Patiala. That training in theatre gave him stage confidence long before he had a recording career.

How did Rajvir Jawanda become a singer?

Rajvir Jawanda became a singer slowly, while holding a police job. Following his father into the Punjab Police, he joined the force as a constable in 2011 and was posted in Jagraon. Music did not stop during those years. He kept singing and practising alongside his duties, and in 2014 he began his recording career with the single Munda Like Me. He also collaborated with Maninder Buttar on the song Vair during this early phase.

The turn came in 2016. Kali Jawande Di brought him wide recognition across Punjab and the diaspora, and it was built on a voice that sounded rooted rather than manufactured: deep, folk-tinged and direct. As the songs travelled, the double life of constable and singer became harder to hold together. In 2019, after about nine years in uniform, he resigned from the Punjab Police to sing full time. It was a clear, unhurried decision by a man who had tested both lives before choosing.

Breakthrough songs: Surname, Kangani and Sardari

After Kali Jawande Di, the releases came in a steady run. Muqabla followed in 2017, and then a string of songs that each showed a different side of him: Patiala Shahi Pagg and Kesri Jhande carried pride and identity, Landlord and Surname spoke in the language of rural standing and family name, and Kangani, a romantic number, became one of his most loved recordings. Khush Reha Kar, Sardari, Do Ni Sajna, Afreen, Sukoon and Tu Dis Penda widened the audience further, and Hon Wala Sardar added to the list of titles listeners attach to his name.

What held this catalogue together was the singing itself. Critics and obituary writers described a performer who bridged folk heritage with newer Punjabi pop, which is why the same voice could suit a village akhara, a wedding playlist and a streaming chart. During the farmers' protest at the Delhi borders in 2020 and 2021, he performed on stage in support of the movement. Obituaries record that he received news of his father's death during one such performance, completed his song, and only then left for the last rites: a detail his listeners have remembered as a measure of the man.

Acting in Punjabi films

Success in music opened the cinema door. He stepped into acting in 2018 with Subedar Joginder Singh, the war film led by Gippy Grewal, in which he played Bahadur Singh. In 2019 he took a lead role in Jind Jaan, and appeared the same year in Mindo Taseeldarni. His film appearances also included Kaka Ji and Sikander 2. On screen he carried the same grounded presence as in his songs, and the roles kept him close to the worlds he sang about: soldiers, village families and young men finding their place.

His last film, Yamla, in which he played a lead role, was released after his death. For many fans it became a farewell viewing: the singer they had followed since 2016, seen one final time as an actor.

Final years, accident and death

Jawanda loved motorcycles and often rode with friends towards the hills. On 27 September 2025, riding towards Shimla, he was seriously injured in a road accident near Baddi in Solan district, Himachal Pradesh, after stray animals came onto the road. He suffered severe head and spinal injuries, was treated first at a hospital in Solan, where he suffered a cardiac arrest, and was then shifted to Fortis Hospital in Mohali. His condition stayed extremely critical, and he remained on ventilator support.

He died at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, on 8 October 2025, at the age of 35, eleven days after the accident. In its statement the hospital said he passed away at 10:55 in the morning and succumbed to multiple organ failure despite continuous care by its critical care and neurosurgery teams. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was among the many public figures who condoled his death, and fellow artists and fans across Punjab and the diaspora paid tribute. He was survived by his mother, his wife and his children.

Rajvir Jawanda's legacy is a body of songs that kept the folk pulse of Malwa inside modern Punjabi pop, sung by a voice listeners trusted because the life behind it was visible: a sarpanch's son, a theatre student, a constable who resigned only when the music had honestly earned his full time. Reports after his death noted that fellow singer Ammy Virk performed, without charge, at shows that had been scheduled for Jawanda, a gesture that said much about the regard the industry held him in.
