Kapil Dev (born 6 January 1959) is a former India cricket captain who led the side to its first World Cup title in 1983. Born in Chandigarh to a Punjabi family that came from what is now Pakistani Punjab, he played his domestic cricket for Haryana. He is the only player to have scored more than 5,000 Test runs and taken more than 400 Test wickets.
Early life
Kapil Dev Nikhanj was born in Chandigarh on 6 January 1959 into a Punjabi Hindu family, to the timber merchant Ram Lal Nikhanj and his wife Rajkumari, according to Wikipedia. The family moved to Fazilka after Partition before settling in Chandigarh. Wikipedia places the paternal family in Montgomery, now Sahiwal in Pakistan's Punjab, and a Tribune column also names Montgomery. India Today says they came from Rawalpindi.
He was one of seven children, studied at DAV School and College in Chandigarh, and trained at Desh Prem Azad's cricket academy in Sector 16, the Free Press Journal reports. India Today says a Chandigarh sector team drafted him at 13 when it was a player short.
Haryana and the Test debut
Chandigarh had no Ranji Trophy side, so Dev played for Haryana. He debuted in November 1975, aged 16, taking six wickets as Punjab were bowled out for 63, according to Wikipedia.
He made his one-day debut at Quetta on 1 October 1978 and his Test debut at Faisalabad on 16 October, the ICC and Wikipedia say. On that tour he hit what the Free Press Journal calls India's fastest Test fifty then, off 33 balls, and visited his family's ancestral village near Montgomery. India Today says he became the youngest to complete the Test double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets, at 21.
The 1983 World Cup
Dev became captain in 1982-83. India had won one World Cup match before 1983, and the Free Press Journal says bookmakers offered 66-1. At Tunbridge Wells on 18 June 1983, with India struggling against Zimbabwe, he scored 175 not out and shared an unbeaten 126 with Syed Kirmani, Wikipedia reports.
In the final, Wikipedia says, he ran back about 20 yards to catch Viv Richards, and the West Indies were bowled out for 140. At 24 he was the youngest captain to win a World Cup, and he finished with 303 runs and 12 wickets.
Records and retirement
He retired in 1994 after 131 Tests and 225 one-day internationals, the ICC says. He took 434 Test wickets, a record he held until Courtney Walsh passed it in 1999, and 253 one-day wickets. He scored 5,248 Test runs, including eight centuries, and 3,783 one-day runs, with a top score of 175 not out.
Haryana won the 1990-91 Ranji Trophy, and in 1990 he hit four straight sixes off Eddie Hemmings at Lord's to avoid the follow-on.
Coach and controversy
Dev coached India from September 1999 and resigned on 12 September 2000 amid match-fixing claims. Former player Manoj Prabhakar alleged that Dev asked him to throw a 1994 match, which Dev defended himself against. Wikipedia says the CBI found "no credible evidence" against him in November 2000, and BCCI officer K. Madhavan concluded he did not try to bribe Prabhakar.
Honours and life off the field
Dev received the Padma Shri in 1982 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. Wisden named him Indian Cricketer of the Century in 2002, and he entered the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2010.
He married Romi Bhatia in 1980, and they have a daughter, Amiya. He became first chancellor of the Sports University of Haryana in 2019 and wrote four books, including We, The Sikhs. The film 83, with Ranveer Singh as Dev, tells the story of the World Cup win.
