Suraiya, born Suraiya Jamal Sheikh on 15 June 1929 in Lahore, was the singing star of 1940s Hindi cinema, an actress who sang her own songs on screen. In a career from 1936 to 1963 she acted in more than 70 films, sang 338 songs, and became the highest paid star of her time.
Early life in Lahore and Bombay
Suraiya Jamal Sheikh was born on 15 June 1929 in Lahore, in the Punjab of British India, to Aziz Jamal Sheikh and Mumtaz Sheikh. Most standard references give Lahore as her birthplace, and this page follows them. A few profiles give Gujranwala instead, the town where her father had a small furniture shop before the family shifted to Lahore, so the disagreement is noted here rather than hidden. She was an only child.
When Suraiya was one year old the family moved to Bombay, now Mumbai, and settled at Krishna Mahal on Marine Drive, the home she kept for the rest of her life. Her maternal uncle, M. Zahoor, a well known screen villain of the 1930s, and her maternal grandmother, Badshah Begum, joined the household. She was schooled at the J.B. Petit High School for Girls in the Fort district, received religious teaching in Persian at home, and had no formal training in music. Her childhood friends at All India Radio, where she sang in children's programmes, included the young Raj Kapoor and Madan Mohan, later her co star and one of her music directors.
Child artist and a voice found on the radio
Suraiya first appeared on screen as a child artist in Madame Fashion in 1936, directed by Jaddanbai. The part that made people notice her came by chance: accompanying her uncle to Mohan Studios in 1941 to watch the shooting of Taj Mahal, she caught the eye of its director, Nanubhai Vakil, who cast her as the young Mumtaz Mahal. Child roles followed, and all the while she kept singing for children's programmes on All India Radio in Bombay, from about the age of six.
The radio singing changed her life. Music director Naushad heard her voice on All India Radio and chose her, at thirteen, to sing for the actress Mehtab in A. R. Kardar's Sharda (1942); profiles of the time say she had to stand on a stool to reach the microphone. Her own first film song, in Nai Duniya (1942), came at the age of twelve. Naushad became her mentor, and she went on to sing about 51 songs under his direction, including many of her biggest hits.
What made Suraiya a singing star?
Suraiya became a singing star because she could do what almost no rival could: play the heroine and sing her own songs, in an age just before playback singing took over. K. L. Saigal, the great singing star of the previous generation, heard her at a rehearsal and recommended her as his heroine in Tadbir (1945). She then starred with Saigal in Omar Khayyam (1946) and Parwana (1947), and the four solo songs she sang in Parwana, composed by Khwaja Khurshid Anwar, made her a genuine singer star.
In Mehboob Khan's Anmol Ghadi (1946) she played the second lead, the village girl Basanti, opposite Noor Jehan, the reigning singing superstar from Punjab, and held her own in a film whose songs, including her own Man Leta Hai Angdai, were heard across the country. Dard (1947) was another major success. When Noor Jehan and Khursheed Bano left for Pakistan at Partition in 1947, Suraiya was left as the leading singing actress working in Bombay.
The peak years, 1948 to 1949
The years 1948 and 1949 were the peak of Suraiya's career. Vidya and Pyar Ki Jeet in 1948, then Badi Behen and Dillagi in 1949, were among the highest grossing films of their years, and with them she became the highest paid female star in India, reported to be paid more than her male co stars. She had eleven film releases in 1949 alone. The crowds were part of the story: after a huge crowd at the premiere of Badi Behen ended in a police baton charge as she entered the hall, she stopped attending her own premieres.
The songs of those years are still the ones listeners name first: Tu Mera Chand Main Teri Chandni from Dillagi, Woh Paas Rahen Ya Door Rahen and Tere Nainon Ne Chori Kiya, O Door Jaanewale from Pyar Ki Jeet, and Man Mor Hua Matwala from Afsar, composed by S. D. Burman. In Dastan (1950) she played an orphan opposite Raj Kapoor, and critics of the day rated her performance above his. Between 1948 and 1951 she also formed a popular screen pair with Dev Anand, acting with him in six films including Vidya, Jeet, Afsar and Do Sitare, with her name billed ahead of his, a measure of her standing at the time.
Mirza Ghalib and the praise of two prime ministers
After a run of weaker films in the early 1950s, Suraiya returned to the top in 1954 with Waaris and, above all, Mirza Ghalib, directed by Sohrab Modi. As Moti Begum, the married lover of the poet Mirza Ghalib, she acted with restraint and sang Ghalib's ghazals herself, among them Dil-e-Nadan Tujhe Hua Kya Hai, sung with Talat Mahmood, and Aah Ko Chahiye Ik Umr Asar Hone Tak. The film won the President's gold medal for Best Feature Film at the National Film Awards for 1954.
Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, seeing the film, told her that she had brought the soul of Mirza Ghalib back to life, praise she later said she valued more than an Oscar. In 1998, during the bicentenary celebrations of Ghalib's birth, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee honoured her in Delhi for the same role. News reports on her life describe her as the only Hindi film actress to be felicitated by two prime ministers for the same performance.
Later films, personal life and retirement
Suraiya's relationship with Dev Anand, her co star in six films between 1948 and 1951, is widely reported in film histories and in Anand's own later writing. The two are reported to have planned marriage, but her grandmother opposed the match and the pair stopped working together after 1951. Suraiya remained unmarried for the rest of her life. This page records only that outline, which both sides' accounts support, and none of the detail that gossip has added since.
From the mid 1950s she cut her work down sharply, appearing only occasionally, in films such as Mr. Lambu (1956) and Shama (1961). Her last film was Rustom Sohrab (1963), in which she played the princess Shehzadi Tahmina opposite Prithviraj Kapoor; its song Yeh Kaisi Ajab Daastaan Ho Gayi Hai, composed by Sajjad Hussain, was her last film song. She retired in her mid thirties, citing low blood pressure and poor health, the year her father died. She lived quietly at Krishna Mahal on Marine Drive, in touch with a small circle of old colleagues, and never sang in public again. She received the Screen Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996 and the Bimal Roy Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. Standard references list no Padma award for her, and this page claims none. She died at Mumbai's Harkishandas Hospital on 31 January 2004, aged 74, and was buried at the Bada Qabrastan in Marine Lines, Mumbai.
Why is Suraiya still remembered?
Suraiya is remembered as the last of Indian cinema's singing superstars, the line that ran from K. L. Saigal and Noor Jehan to her, and as the star who closed that era: after her, actresses acted and playback singers sang, and the two arts separated. In her heyday she was called Malika-e-Husn, queen of beauty, and Malika-e-Adakari, queen of acting, and fruit sellers are said to have sold melons as coming from Suraiya's fields, meaning as sweet as her voice. In 2013 India Post issued a stamp bearing her image as part of the centenary of Indian cinema. For Punjab, her story is part of the region's film history: a girl born in Lahore, raised in Bombay, who sang in her own voice at the top of Hindi cinema for a decade, and whose contemporary and rival Noor Jehan began in the same Punjab. Between them, the two Lahore linked voices defined what a singing star was.
