Jordan Sandhu, born Jasminder Singh Sandhu on 12 July 1994, is a Punjabi singer and actor from Dhariwal village in Amritsar district, Punjab, who learned to sing from his mother at the age of five. He won the Best Debut Vocalist award at the PTC Punjabi Music Awards for Muchh Phut Gabru, and his singles Teeje Week, Muchh Rakhi Aa and Handsome Jatta made him one of the most reliable hitmakers in modern Punjabi pop.

Early life in Dhariwal, Amritsar

Jasminder Singh Sandhu was born on 12 July 1994 in village Dhariwal in Amritsar district, in the Majha region of Punjab, into a Sikh family. He did his schooling at Khalsa Public School in Amritsar and went on to a Bachelor of Arts at Guru Nanak Dev University. Music began at home: his mother started teaching him to sing when he was five, and he later trained properly at the singing academy of Guru Harcharan Singh Kot Khalsa.

He won singing competitions at state level through his school and college years, even though his father hoped he might choose politics or the police instead. When lyricist Bunty Bains introduced him to the Punjabi music industry, Bains also gave him his stage name: Jordan Sandhu.

Brand, Muchh Phut Gabru and the debut award

Sandhu's first release was Brand in 2014, written by Kumar Sunny, composed by Desi Crew and released on the Fine Tone label. The follow-up, Muchh Phut Gabru in 2015 on T-Series, was the song that established him, and it won him the Punjabi Music Best Debut Vocalist (Male) Award at the PTC Punjabi Music Awards in 2016.

The hits then came steadily: Bebe Di Pasand, Sardar Bandey and Muchh Rakhi Aa in 2016, Birthday in 2017, and in 2018 the two songs that still define him, Teeje Week, which reached number 7 on the UK Asian chart, and Handsome Jatta, recorded for the film Ashke. Later singles such as Kaake Da Vyah, Botal Free, Jatt Naal Yaari and Black Effect, and the EPs High Five and Fame, both in 2022, kept the run going into a second decade.

The catalogue underneath the signature hits is long and remarkably consistent. Bebe Di Pasand reached number 12 on the UK Asian chart in 2016, the same year as Kismat Di Maari, Sardar Bandey with Manni Sandhu, Chhad Na Jaavin and Muchh Rakhi Aa. In 2017 came Vichhdi Marjaani, Ambersar Waala, Daaru Pee Ke Roye Ni, Bandh Karke Sheeshe Car De and Draamebaaziyan. After the 2018 peak he added Kaake Da Vyah and Gabhru Nu Tarsengi, and in 2020 and 2021 Botal Free, Bewafa Coka, Defend, Info with Gurlez Akhtar, Jatt Naal Yaari, Do Vaari Jatt and Munda Sardaran Da, plus Qatal for the film Warning.

In 2022 he consolidated the catalogue into two EPs: High Five, with Desi Crew producing and lyricists including Kaptaan, Narinder Bath and Bunty Bains, and Fame, released that July, whose single Freestyle reached number 16 on the UK Asian chart and number 10 on the UK Punjabi chart, alongside Black Effect and Shehar Vichon Geda. He has also guested for others, on Dilpreet Dhillon's Jodhpur and Pari Pandher's Sheesha. Few Punjabi singers of his generation have kept a chart presence running, almost without a gap, from 2015 onwards.

Sandhu made his acting debut in 2018 in the war biopic Subedar Joginder Singh, playing Bant Singh, and the performance brought him the Brit Asia Award for Best Debut Actor in 2019. In 2019 he played the lead in Kaake Da Viyah, took the role of Jaggi in Kala Shah Kala alongside Binnu Dhillon and Sargun Mehta, and played Bittu in Gidarh Singhi.

Off stage he is known as Handsome Jatt and Mirza to friends, names that follow the look his fans copy.
