Early life
Binnu Dhillon was born Birender Singh Dhillon on 29 August 1975 in Dhuri, a town in the Sangrur district of Punjab, into a Jatt Sikh family. He studied at Sarvhitkari Vidya Mandir in Dhuri and, unusually for a film comedian, took his studies seriously all the way to a postgraduate degree in Theatre and Television from Punjabi University, Patiala. Long before the camera found him, he was a bhangra performer, dancing at India festivals in Germany and the United Kingdom, where the stage taught him how to hold a crowd.
University changed everything. At Punjabi University he acted in plays as a student and then as part of the theatre and television department's repertory, and his classmate through both college and university was Rana Ranbir, who would become a fellow star of Punjabi comedy. The discipline of repertory theatre — voice, timing, improvisation — became the engine of everything he did later.
Career
Dhillon began his acting career on television, debuting in the serial Parchhawain in 1998, followed by shows like Sarhad, Lori, Gaoundi Dharti and Channo Chan Vargi. He also directed the stage play Naughty Baba in Town, which toured the United States and Canada. His Punjabi film career began with small roles, and in 2002 he made his Bollywood debut in Shaheed-E-Azam, the Bhagat Singh biopic.
The breakthrough arrived with Carry On Jatta (2012), the ensemble comedy that became one of the defining films of the Punjabi cinema revival, and its sequels. From there he became the industry's most dependable comic lead and co-lead, fronting Mr & Mrs 420, Lucky Di Unlucky Story, Vadhayiyaan Ji Vadhayiyaan, Jatt & Juliet-adjacent ensembles, and Kala Shah Kala (2019) opposite Sargun Mehta. He also crossed into Hindi cinema with Anurag Kashyap's Dev D (2009).
Beyond acting, Dhillon launched Binnu Dhillon Production and worked as a television presenter, returning regularly to the stage that trained him. His comic persona — rooted in the Malwa dialect, physical timing and an everyman's exasperation — became so familiar that films began to be written around it, and his pairings with co-stars like Sargun Mehta, Neeru Bajwa and Jaswinder Bhalla produced some of the decade's biggest Punjabi hits.
Major works
Carry On Jatta (2012) remains his landmark film — a comedy of misunderstandings that ran to packed houses and established a franchise. Its sequel Carry On Jatta 2 (2018) and the later Carry On Jatta 3 (2023) kept the series at the top of the Punjabi box office. Mr & Mrs 420 (2014) and its follow-ups showed he could carry a film as the central star, while Kala Shah Kala (2019) let him play romance alongside comedy. His earlier turns in Taur Mittran Di, Jatt Airways and Best of Luck built the persona: the loud, warm, quick-talking Punjabi everyman.
Personal life
Dhillon is married to Gurjinder Kaur and is the father of two daughters. He keeps his family life largely out of the press and is based in Punjab, where he remains active in theatre alongside his film work.
Legacy
Binnu Dhillon belongs to the generation that took Punjabi cinema from a struggling regional industry to a confident, box-office-driven one. His theatre training gave his comedy a craft that imitators struggle to copy, and his partnership with writers and directors of the Carry On Jatta universe helped set the template for the modern Punjabi blockbuster comedy.
