History

Dhuri is an old market town of the Sangrur region that the railway made important: its station on the Ludhiana–Jakhal line turned a qasba bazaar into a collection point for the grain of the surrounding villages. Through the twentieth century it grew as a typical Malwa railway town — the mandi, the commission agents, the small traders, the schools serving the countryside around it. The station's goods yard filled each April with wheat, and the town's arthiyas became names known across the district. It never had a princely past or a battlefield; its history is the quieter history of commerce and agriculture — the story of thousands of Malwa towns, played out in full.

That changed, politically, in 2022. Dhuri's assembly constituency became one of the most-watched seats in Punjab when Bhagwant Mann — the Aam Aadmi Party's chief ministerial face — contested and won it by a huge margin on his way to becoming Chief Minister. Overnight the railway town was on every news channel, and it has remained politically significant since.

Geography & people

Dhuri lies in Sangrur district, about 18 kilometres from Sangrur town, on the Ludhiana–Jakhal railway line and the roads linking Sangrur, Barnala and Malerkotla — a crossroads town in the truest sense. The 2011 census counted 55,225 residents in the municipal council. Punjabi is the everyday language; Sikhs form the majority. The economy rests on the grain market, small trade and the services of a district town — with many residents working in Sangrur or commuting further.

Places of interest

Dhuri's interest is civic: the railway station that made it, the grain market at harvest time, the old bazaar streets, the town's gurdwaras and temples, and the schools and colleges that serve the surrounding villages. The 2022 election added a political landmark of sorts — the constituency office that launched a chief minister. It serves as a base for exploring Sangrur district — the district town's Banasar Bagh is twenty minutes away, and the Malerkotla region's distinctive culture is next door.

Notable people

Bhagwant Mann — who won Dhuri's assembly seat in 2022 by one of the largest margins in Punjab and became Chief Minister — is the town's great modern name; the constituency is now permanently associated with his rise, and every election since has been fought in its shadow. Beyond that, Dhuri's notables are the quiet kind: its traders, teachers and the railway families who built the town's twentieth century.
