A social media post attributed to gangster Goldy Dhillon has claimed responsibility for the murder of Punjabi LGBTQ influencer and makeup artist Mad Sandhu, who was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne assailants in Amritsar on Saturday evening.
The claim
According to reports, the post — which surfaced on Facebook soon after the killing — accused Sandhu of having “spoilt” Punjab and warned of more such action. Similar posts attributed to Jagga Tarn Taran and Lucky Johal Spain also claimed responsibility, alleging “cultural corruption”.
The claim’s language carries a disturbing echo: a year ago, influencer Kamal Kaur Bhabhi was murdered in Bathinda, and a radical Sikh vigilante claimed responsibility, reasoning that her videos were “vulgar”.
What the police say
Amritsar police have not confirmed who is behind the post. Officials said its authenticity is being examined as part of the probe. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Sirivennela said two unidentified men fired at Sandhu around 6 pm on Loharka Road, while DCP (Investigation) Prabhjot Singh Virk said the case is in its initial stages, an FIR has been registered and the family’s statements have been recorded.
Police recovered two empty bullet shells from the spot, and multiple teams have been formed to trace the assailants. The motive remains officially unclear.
Vanishing posts and a widening probe
A day after the killing, several of the posts claiming responsibility had vanished from social media, The Hindu reported. With speculation rife, investigators are also looking at Sikh radical groups — a three-month-old audio-video clip allegedly showing a confrontation between Sandhu and a Nihang jathedar has resurfaced online.
People close to Sandhu say he had flagged persistent threats to his life before the murder, and his killing has triggered a fierce political row, with the opposition accusing the AAP government of letting law and order slip into the hands of the mafia.
Who was Mad Sandhu?
Madhusudan, known as Mad Sandhu, was one of Punjab’s most prominent LGBTQ voices — a makeup artist and stylist with lakhs of followers who appeared on podcasts to talk about makeup, films and gender issues. He regularly faced homophobic trolling and answered it with the line: “God has made me the way I am.”
