The Jalandhar village that has given Indian hockey some of its finest players erupted in celebration after the men's team defended its Asian Games gold with a 5-1 thrashing of Malaysia in the final at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, sealing direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Manpreet Singh's historic hat-trick of golds
For Mithapur's most famous son, former India captain Manpreet Singh, the gold was a landmark. With 430 international appearances, he is now the most-capped player in the history of Indian men's hockey, and he became the first Indian player to win three Asian Games medals — gold at Incheon 2014, Hangzhou 2022 and now Aichi-Nagoya 2026.
Speaking to ANI after the final, Manpreet dedicated the medal to his family. “This gold medal was very important for us. After winning gold at the Asian Games, we secured direct qualification for the Olympics. Both the men's and women's teams have qualified for LA from here, so it has been a significant achievement for us,” he said.

Striker Mandeep Singh, also from Mithapur, played his part in the triumph with 312 international caps to his name. Back home, his father told reporters he had spoken to Mandeep an hour before the final, blessing him to make the nation proud, and expressed hope that the team would carry its form into the Olympics.
In Mithapur, a steady stream of visitors poured into the players' homes to congratulate the families. Saag and bhindi — the players' favourite home food — await their return, and mothers exhorted their sons to now bring home Olympic gold in 2028.
Women's gold completes the double
The village had double reason to celebrate: the Indian women's team also won hockey gold, the first time both Indian hockey teams have finished on top at the same Asian Games. Mithapur, long known as Punjab's hockey nursery, celebrated the daughters of Indian hockey alongside its sons.
