Opposition Targets AAP Over Mad Sandhu Murder in Punjab

The killing of social media influencer and makeup artist Mad Sandhu in Amritsar has turned into a political flashpoint in Punjab, with opposition leaders from the BJP and the Congress accusing the Aam Aadmi Party government of losing control over law and order in the state.

The killing on Loharka Road

Mad Sandhu, whose real name was Madhusudan, was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne assailants on Loharka Road in Amritsar on Saturday evening. The 37-year-old, a prominent LGBTQ activist with more than 2.2 lakh followers on Instagram, suffered two gunshot wounds and was rushed to a private hospital, where he died during treatment. Police registered an FIR following the family's statement. DCP P.S. Virk said investigators have gathered some leads and are working to identify the attackers. The motive has not yet been established.

BJP: 'Punjab is in the hands of the mafia'

Delhi Environment Minister and BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa launched a sharp attack on the Bhagwant Mann government. Speaking to news agency ANI, Sirsa said, "There is no law and order in Punjab. The law and order situation in Punjab is in the hands of the mafia." He alleged that extortion gangs, mafia groups and the drug mafia were operating freely in the state under AAP rule, and claimed the police did not even register FIRs. Sirsa linked the killing to the recent murder of former sarpanch Navtej Singh in Ludhiana, asking, "If even a sarpanch of a village is not safe, and a former sarpanch is not safe, then who is safe?"

Congress leaders join the attack

BJP MP Tarun Chugh called the killing "extremely tragic and heart-wrenching" and accused the AAP government of failing to contain criminal activity, saying an atmosphere of fear had spread across Punjab. Congress leader Raj Kumar Verka alleged that law and order in the state had "completely collapsed." Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla said the murder was "not just Mad Sandhu's murder, but a murder of law and order," and demanded the immediate arrest of the assailants. Aujla also claimed Sandhu had faced repeated threats earlier, and demanded a probe into whether earlier complaints about his safety had been acted upon.

Demands for security on Loharka Road

Aujla called for stronger security arrangements in the Loharka Road area, including a police station, adequate CCTV coverage and streetlights, pointing to the large population and the presence of schools there. Police officials said multiple teams are examining CCTV footage from the area and that two empty shells were recovered from the scene. Investigators are pursuing different angles to determine the motive.

A wider law-and-order debate

The killing came a day after former sarpanch Navtej Singh was shot dead in Ludhiana, and the opposition has used the two back-to-back murders to paint the Mann government as soft on crime. The controversy has also spilled into the education debate: Sirsa linked it to the AAP government's recent suspension of MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana, alleging that raising one's voice against problems in schools gets one "thrown out of the party." The AAP government had cited "anti-party activities and indiscipline" for the suspension.

Who was Mad Sandhu?

Mad Sandhu, real name Madhusudan, was a makeup artist and social media influencer with more than 2.2 lakh followers on Instagram. He was a well-known voice on podcasts, speaking about makeup, the film industry and gender issues, and was often targeted with homophobic abuse online.

Where did the killing take place?

The attack happened on Loharka Road in Amritsar on Saturday evening. Two unidentified men on a motorcycle opened fire, and Sandhu suffered two gunshot wounds before being rushed to a private hospital, where he died.

ਮੈਡ ਸੰਧੂ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਅਸਲੀ ਨਾਮ ਮਧੂਸੂਦਨ ਸੀ, ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਨੀਵਾਰ ਸ਼ਾਮ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਦੇ ਲੋਹਾਰਕਾ ਰੋਡ ’ਤੇ ਮੋਟਰਸਾਈਕਲ ਸਵਾਰ ਦੋ ਹਮਲਾਵਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੋਲੀ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਹੱਤਿਆ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ। 37 ਸਾਲਾ ਮੈਡ ਸੰਧੂ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਇੰਸਟਾਗ੍ਰਾਮ ’ਤੇ 2.2 ਲੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਫਾਲੋਅਰ ਸਨ, ਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਗੋਲੀਆਂ ਲੱਗੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਲਾਜ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ। ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਬਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਐਫਆਈਆਰ ਦਰਜ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ। ਡੀਸੀਪੀ ਪੀ.ਐਸ. ਵਿਰਕ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਸੁਰਾਗ ਮਿਲੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਹਮਲਾਵਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਈ ਕੰਮ ਚੱਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਹੱਤਿਆ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਅਜੇ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ।

ਭਾਜਪਾ: ‘ਪੰਜਾਬ ਮਾਫੀਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ’

ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੇ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਜਪਾ ਨੇਤਾ ਮਨਜਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਿਰਸਾ ਨੇ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਮਾਨ ਸਰਕਾਰ ’ਤੇ ਤਿੱਖਾ ਹਮਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਨਿਊਜ਼ ਏਜੰਸੀ ਏਐਨਆਈ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿਰਸਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, ‘‘ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ-ਵਿਵਸਥਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ-ਵਿਵਸਥਾ ਮਾਫੀਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ।’’ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲਗਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਆਪ ਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਹੇਠ ਸੂਬੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਿਰੌਤੀ ਗੈਂਗ, ਮਾਫੀਆ ਅਤੇ ਨਸ਼ਾ ਮਾਫੀਆ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹੇਆਮ ਸਰਗਰਮ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਐਫਆਈਆਰ ਵੀ ਦਰਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ। ਸਿਰਸਾ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਹੱਤਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਸਰਪੰਚ ਨਵਤੇਜ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਕਤਲ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ, ‘‘ਜੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਦਾ ਸਰਪੰਚ ਹੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਾਬਕਾ ਸਰਪੰਚ ਵੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਨਹੀਂ, ਤਾਂ ਕੌਣ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਹੈ?’’

ਕਾਂਗਰਸ ਦੇ ਨੇਤਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਹਮਲਾ

ਭਾਜਪਾ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਦ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਤਰੁਣ ਚੁੱਘ ਨੇ ਕਤਲ ਨੂੰ ‘‘ਬੇਹੱਦ ਦੁਖਦ ਅਤੇ ਹਿਰਦੇਵਿਦਾਰਕ’’ ਕਰਾਰ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਆਪ ਸਰਕਾਰ ’ਤੇ ਅਪਰਾਧ ’ਤੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਪਾਉਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸਫਲ ਰਹਿਣ ਦਾ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲਗਾਇਆ। ਕਾਂਗਰਸ ਨੇਤਾ ਰਾਜ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਵੇਰਕਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸੂਬੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ-ਵਿਵਸਥਾ ‘‘ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਢਹਿ-ਢੇਰੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ।’’ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਤੋਂ ਸੰਸਦ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਗੁਰਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਔਜਲਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ‘‘ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਮੈਡ ਸੰਧੂ ਦੀ ਹੱਤਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ-ਵਿਵਸਥਾ ਦੀ ਹੱਤਿਆ ਹੈ।’’ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਹਮਲਾਵਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰੀ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਦਾਅਵਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਮੈਡ ਸੰਧੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵੀ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਧਮਕੀਆਂ ਮਿਲਦੀਆਂ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ।

ਲੋਹਾਰਕਾ ਰੋਡ ’ਤੇ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ

ਔਜਲਾ ਨੇ ਲੋਹਾਰਕਾ ਰੋਡ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਥਾਣਾ, ਲੋੜੀਂਦੇ ਸੀਸੀਟੀਵੀ ਕੈਮਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਸਟ੍ਰੀਟ ਲਾਈਟਾਂ ਸਮੇਤ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਤ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ। ਪੁਲਿਸ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਕਈ ਟੀਮਾਂ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੇ ਸੀਸੀਟੀਵੀ ਫੁਟੇਜ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਕਰ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਘਟਨਾ ਸਥਲ ਤੋਂ ਦੋ ਖੋਖੇ ਬਰਾਮਦ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ।

ਕਾਨੂੰਨ-ਵਿਵਸਥਾ ’ਤੇ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਬਹਿਸ

ਇਹ ਕਤਲ ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਸਰਪੰਚ ਨਵਤੇਜ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਕਤਲ ਤੋਂ ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਬਾਅਦ ਹੋਇਆ, ਅਤੇ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਧਿਰ ਨੇ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਹੱਤਿਆਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਮਾਨ ਸਰਕਾਰ ’ਤੇ ਅਪਰਾਧ ’ਤੇ ਨਰਮੀ ਦਾ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲਗਾਇਆ ਹੈ। ਸਿਰਸਾ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਵਿਵਾਦ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਜੋੜਿਆ — ਆਪ ਵਿਧਾਇਕ ਸੁਖਵੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਮੈਸਰਖਾਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਅੱਤਲ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਹਵਾਲਾ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲਗਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਸਕੂਲਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਮੱਸਿਆਵਾਂ ਉੱਠਾਉਣ ’ਤੇ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ‘‘ਬਾਹਰ ਕੱਢ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।’’ ਆਪ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਮੁਅੱਤਲੀ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ‘‘ਪਾਰਟੀ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਗਤੀਵਿਧੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਅਨੁਸ਼ਾਸਨਹੀਣਤਾ’’ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਸੀ।

ਮੈਡ ਸੰਧੂ ਕੌਣ ਸਨ?

ਮੈਡ ਸੰਧੂ, ਅਸਲੀ ਨਾਮ ਮਧੂਸੂਦਨ, ਮੇਕਅੱਪ ਕਲਾਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸੋਸ਼ਲ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਕਾਰ ਸਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਇੰਸਟਾਗ੍ਰਾਮ ’ਤੇ 2.2 ਲੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਫਾਲੋਅਰ ਸਨ। ਉਹ ਪਾਡਕਾਸਟਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੇਕਅੱਪ, ਫਿਲਮ ਇੰਡਸਟਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਲਿੰਗ ਮੁੱਦਿਆਂ ’ਤੇ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਬੋਲਣ ਲਈ ਜਾਣੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਅਕਸਰ ਆਨਲਾਈਨ ਨਫ਼ਰਤ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਰਹੇ।

ਹੱਤਿਆ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਹੋਈ?

ਇਹ ਹਮਲਾ ਸ਼ਨੀਵਾਰ ਸ਼ਾਮ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਦੇ ਲੋਹਾਰਕਾ ਰੋਡ ’ਤੇ ਹੋਇਆ। ਮੋਟਰਸਾਈਕਲ ਸਵਾਰ ਦੋ ਅਣਪਛਾਤੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਗੋਲੀਆਂ ਚਲਾਈਆਂ; ਸੰਧੂ ਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਗੋਲੀਆਂ ਲੱਗੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ।

ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਜਾਂਚ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਹੈ?

ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਬਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਐਫਆਈਆਰ ਦਰਜ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ। ਡੀਸੀਪੀ ਪੀ.ਐਸ. ਵਿਰਕ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਸੁਰਾਗ ਮਿਲੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਕੇਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਲਦ ਸੁਲਝਾਇਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ; ਹੱਤਿਆ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਹਮਲਾਵਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਅਜੇ ਤਕ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗ ਸਕੀ।
