The Shiromani Akali Dal will launch an intensive door-to-door campaign across Punjab from October 6, kick-starting its ground programme for the 2027 Assembly elections. The campaign will run simultaneously in all Assembly constituencies, with party workers collecting voter suggestions that will feed into the party’s election manifesto, due to be announced on November 1.

The programme was announced on Thursday after a party meeting chaired by SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal. Announcing the details to the media, party secretary Daljit Singh Cheema said the door-to-door drive would be a mass contact exercise aimed at taking voter feedback directly from households. A state-wide bus yatra led by Badal will follow, beginning from Talwandi Sabo on November 10 and covering two to three Assembly constituencies a day.

Door-to-door from October 6

The campaign marks the SAD’s first structured grassroots outreach since the party announced its 2027 poll programme. Party leaders said workers will go constituency by constituency, gathering suggestions on issues ranging from farm distress and unemployment to civic amenities, which will then be shaped into the manifesto.

The announcement also keeps the SAD visible at a time when Punjab’s political churn is intensifying — the Congress has just installed Pargat Singh as its new state president, while the ruling AAP is dealing with the fallout of suspending its own MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana.

Bus yatra from Talwandi Sabo

After the door-to-door phase, Badal will lead a state-wide bus yatra starting from Talwandi Sabo on November 10. Talwandi Sabo, home to Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, is one of Sikhism’s five takhts and has been a traditional launchpad for SAD’s major campaigns.

The yatra is planned as a mass contact programme covering two to three Assembly constituencies every day, giving the party a second, more visible wave of outreach before the manifesto release on November 1 — though the announced dates suggest the yatra would run past the manifesto announcement, indicating the programme is being treated as a rolling campaign.

No BJP alliance talks, for now

At the same meeting, senior SAD leader Balwinder Singh Bhundar sought to put an end to speculation about a reunion with the BJP. “No talks of alliance are going on with the BJP, but we do not know about the future,” Bhundar told mediapersons. Cheema added that the party had given “all rights for alliance” to the party president.

The speculation had been rife for months and reignited after Badal’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Parliament House in New Delhi on August 7 — their first one-on-one political meeting since the two parties ended their 23-year alliance in 2020 over the farm laws. Before the split, the two parties had together formed governments in Punjab in 1997, 2007 and 2012.
