India's men defended their Asian Games hockey crown in style on Saturday, thrashing Malaysia 5-1 in the final at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Kakamigahara, Japan, to win the gold medal and seal a direct berth at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

The victory was historic on two counts. It was India's fifth Asian Games men's hockey title — after wins in 1966, 1998, 2014 and 2022 — but the first time the men have won successive Asian Games gold medals. And with the women having claimed their own gold earlier in the Games, it marked the first time India has swept both hockey golds at a single Asian Games.

How the final unfolded

India, led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, started cautiously against a Malaysia side sitting in a low defensive block. The deadlock broke in the 12th minute when Harmanpreet converted a penalty corner with a powerful drag-flick to put India ahead.

Malaysia answered within two minutes, Shello Silverius thrashing a half-volley into the roof of the net in the 14th minute to level at 1-1. The first quarter ended all square, but India regained the lead in the 23rd minute when Jugraj Singh converted another penalty corner to make it 2-1, and the defending champions held that advantage to half-time.

Hardik Singh extended the lead in the 42nd minute from a third penalty corner, effectively settling a contest Malaysia had kept competitive for three quarters. Harmanpreet added his second of the final and Shilanand Lakra completed the rout as India ran out 5-1 winners, undefeated through the tournament.

Road to the final

India reached the final through the tournament's most dramatic game — a 4-3 semi-final win over arch-rivals Pakistan. Harmanpreet scored twice before Abhishek struck the decisive goal with 49.2 seconds remaining, after India had squandered a 3-0 lead. Malaysia booked their place in the gold-medal match with a 2-1 win over South Korea.

Punjab at the heart of it

The triumph carried a strong Punjabi imprint. Harmanpreet Singh, the captain and drag-flick spearhead from Punjab, scored twice in the final; Jugraj Singh and Hardik Singh — both Punjab products — added a goal apiece. For a state that treats hockey as its own game, the gold completed a golden fortnight after India's women ended their 44-year wait for the Asian Games title.

The win also secured India's direct qualification for the LA28 Olympics, removing the need to go through the qualifiers and setting up an Olympic campaign with genuine medal expectations.
