Kumkum Mohod, 17, Beats Korea in Shoot-Off to Win Historic Asian Games Recurve Gold

Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod held her nerve in a one-arrow shoot-off on Saturday to win the women's individual recurve gold at the Asian Games in Okazaki, beating South Korea's Oh Yejin 6-5 and becoming the first Indian woman ever to win a medal in the event.
The final was tied 5-5 after five sets. In the decider, Oh shot an 8 — and Mohod answered with a perfect 10 to seal the title. The gold also earned India an individual quota place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
A comeback for the ages
Mohod had to fight back from behind. Oh took the opening set 29-27 for a 2-0 lead, and with the second set shared at 29-29, the South Korean was ahead 3-1. The Indian teenager responded with three successive 10s for a perfect 30 in the third set, levelling the match at 3-3.
Oh edged the fourth set 28-27 to move within a point of the title at 5-3. Facing elimination, Mohod produced another flawless display — opening the fifth set with a 10 and finishing with a perfect 30 — to force the shoot-off. Then came the single arrow that settled it: 10 to 8.
Through the world's best to reach the final
Mohod's path to gold ran through the sport's elite. She had eliminated reigning world champion and Olympic team gold medallist Kang Chaeyoung 6-4 in the quarterfinals, then defeated China's Zhu Jingyi — the 2025 world championship silver medallist — 6-2 in the semifinal, becoming the first Indian woman to reach an Asian Games individual recurve final. That semifinal run had already secured the Olympic quota for India.
The youngster had qualified only 10th in the ranking round, making her run through three of the world's top archers all the more remarkable.
Third medal of a remarkable Games
The individual gold was Mohod's third medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. A day earlier, she had powered India to the women's recurve team gold alongside Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma — India's stunning 5-3 win over 10-time Olympic champions South Korea (see our coverage) — and she also claimed mixed-team silver with Dhiraj Bommadevara.
Mohod, from Amravati in Maharashtra, rose from practising with a bamboo bow to training at a Khelo India centre. Her campaign in Japan — beating the world champion, the world silver medallist and a Korean great in a shoot-off — marks a landmark moment for Indian recurve archery, which had never seen an Indian woman on an Asian Games individual podium until today.
