Noor Jehan (21 September 1926 to 23 December 2000), born Allah Wasai at Kot Murad Khan near Kasur in Punjab, was the singer and actress honoured across South Asia as Malika-e-Tarannum, the Queen of Melody. Trained in the Patiala gharana as a child, she starred in the biggest Bombay films of the 1940s, then moved to Pakistan at Partition and became the defining playback voice of its cinema, recording thousands of songs in Urdu, Punjabi and Sindhi over a career of six decades.

Early life in Kasur

Allah Wasai was born on 21 September 1926 at Kot Murad Khan, near Kasur, the youngest child of the musician and singer Imdad Ali and his wife Fateh Bibi. Music was the family trade: her grandmother Amma Hasso was a well known singer, and an aunt sang too. She began to sing at the age of five, and her parents, seeing her gift, arranged classical training for her, first under Ustad Ghulam Mohammad and then under the celebrated Kajjanbai, who is said to have set her twelve hours of daily practice. At nine she caught the ear of the Punjabi musician Ghulam Ahmed Chishti, who introduced her to the stage in Lahore and composed ghazals, naats and folk songs for her.

In the early 1930s the theatre owner Diwan Sardari Lal took the family to Calcutta to build film careers for Wasai and her older sisters, who went on to be billed as the Punjab Mail. There the child received the stage name Baby Noor Jehan, and from the age of eleven she trained in Calcutta in the Patiala gharana traditions of thumri, dhrupad and khayal. Some later sources give her birth year as 1929; 21 September 1926 is the date carried by most standard references.

How did a child singer from Kasur become a Bombay star?

She became a star through Punjabi films first. In the Calcutta made Punjabi film Pind di Kuri (1935) she acted with her sisters and sang Langh Aja Patan Chanaan Da, her earliest hit. She played the child Heer in Heer-Sayyal (1937), and her song Shala Jawaniyan Maney from Gul Bakawli (1939) was widely popular. Back in Lahore from 1938, she found a mentor in the music director Ghulam Haider, who composed the songs that made her name in 1939. Her first adult lead, opposite Pran in Khandaan (1942), was a major success, and she moved to Bombay with its director, Syed Shaukat Hussain Rizvi, whom she married.

From 1945 to 1947 Noor Jehan was among the biggest stars of Indian cinema. Badi Maa, Zeenat and Gaon Ki Gori (all 1945), Anmol Ghadi (1946), and Jugnu and Mirza Sahiban (both 1947) were among the top grossing films of their years, and alongside Suraiya she was one of the two biggest female stars in the country on the eve of Independence. Mirza Sahiban, opposite Trilok Kapoor, was her last film released in India.

Partition and a new start in Pakistan

In 1947 Rizvi and Noor Jehan chose to move to the new state of Pakistan, settling in Karachi and ending her Indian career at its peak. Her first Pakistani film, Chan Wey (1951), made her a pioneer twice over: she played the heroine and sang playback, and she co directed the film with Rizvi, becoming the first woman film director in Pakistan. It was the highest grossing Pakistani film of 1951, and Dupatta (1952) was an even bigger success. Her marriage to Rizvi ended in divorce in 1953; she kept custody of their three children. In 1959 she married the actor Ejaz Durrani, a marriage that also ended in divorce, in 1971, and produced three more children.

Her last film as actress and singer was Ghalib (1961), and she left the screen after a final appearance in Baaji (1963), closing a 33 year acting career. In Pakistan she had acted in 14 films, ten in Urdu and four in Punjabi. Acting ended; the singing, which had always been the deeper gift, now became the whole of her art.

The voice of Pakistani cinema

As a playback singer she had no rival in Pakistan for four decades. She sang duets with Ahmed Rushdi, Mehdi Hassan, Masood Rana, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Mujeeb Aalam, and her rendering of Faiz Ahmed Faiz's poem Mujhse Pehli Si Mohabbat Mere Mehboob Na Maang, set by Rasheed Attre for the film Qaidi (1962), remains the classic example of tarannum, poetry carried as song. Her patriotic songs during the 1965 war between Pakistan and India carried her voice into every home with a radio. She is credited with around 10,000 recorded songs in Urdu, Punjabi and Sindhi, among them 2,422 songs in 1,148 Pakistani films. Even in the 1990s she was still recording, singing for the debutante actresses Neeli and Reema. Lata Mangeshkar, who met her on her 1982 return to India, remarked that Noor Jehan could sing as low and as high as she wished while the quality of the voice never changed.

Honours and later life

Pakistan honoured her early and often: the Pride of Performance and the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 1965, the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 1996, and more than fifteen Nigar Awards across her career, including the Millennium Singer honour. In 1971 she represented Pakistan at the World Song Festival in Tokyo. Her 1982 visit to India, for the golden jubilee of the Indian talkie, was an event in itself: she was received by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in New Delhi and by Dilip Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar in Bombay, meeting the co stars of her Bombay years after a gap of 35 years. In 1991 Vanessa Redgrave invited her to perform at a Royal Albert Hall fundraiser in London.

Her health failed slowly. Chest pains on a North American tour in 1986 led to a diagnosis of angina and bypass surgery, and in her last years she lived with chronic kidney disease and dialysis. On 23 December 2000 she died of heart failure at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi. President Pervez Musharraf ordered a state funeral; she was buried in the Gizri Graveyard in Karachi, the city she had chosen in 1947.

Why is Noor Jehan still called Malika-e-Tarannum?

Malika-e-Tarannum, Queen of Melody, was the title Pakistan gave her, and no successor has taken it from her. The British entertainment weekly Eastern Eye, ranking her among the greatest Bollywood singers of all time, called her the first female singing star of Indian cinema, who helped lay the foundation of playback singing and then single handedly set music in Pakistan on its course. Her singing line continued in her daughter Zil-e-Huma, and her grandchildren include the actress Sonya Jehan. On her death the poet and writer Javed Akhtar said that in the worst of India Pakistan relations the shared cultural heritage remained a common bridge, and that Noor Jehan was one such durable bridge. For Punjabis the claim is simpler: the greatest female voice the region has produced was born in a musician's house near Kasur, and it sang in Punjabi first.
